Can't help you, but must reply anyway as historical/comparative linguistics is a true love of mine! The word for courage in modern Swedish is 'mod', and the word for bravado is 'övermod'! Generally I think an untrained Scandinavian would stand a better chance of understanding Old English than an un...

I wondered why this affected me so much, especially as I was not close to my grand-mother. I think partially it is because as an atheist I do not believe in any after live. I believe that our trace is in our lifes, and when I see that not even her own daughters come to the funeral of my grand-mothe...

That's a nice plan, but doesn't really fit my personality! I'm a "get started, get it over with" kind of person. My wife and kids like to have me home as early as possible also :)

My kids are still small - 6, 4 and 2. We're not going to have any more. Now that I'm very close to leaving the most intense baby/toddler years behind me, I have mixed feelings. Pretty soon there will be no more diapers, not too many waking nights, no constant looking after, I will get more freedom a...

That period is a lot longer than 45 days in my case, and already started a month ago or so :P
It is indeed a bit depressing. Thankfully I have large nice windows at work though! Biking to work doesn't give me any sunlight, but at least I get some fresh air and that helps a bit.

Like some posters already said, driving everywhere is my guess at the number one reason. Myself, I get one hour of exercise a day just by commuting. By bike. :) Once I got used to biking to work, I just can't live without it. I actually quit my last job for that reason - I worked as a consultant and...

How Anti-intellectualism is destroying America "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant." Barack Obama finally said it. ... This is the one thing about American culture that I have the most difficulty coming to terms with. I have no problem with emotional, I have no problem with...

Europe is taking a heavy beating right now. Stockholm stock exchange down 7.2 today, similar figures in other countries. Germany had to bail out giant bank Hypo Real Estate Holding. In Iceland people are stocking up on food and essentials because prices are skyrocketing.

Oh, hi there Norweigan neighbor! Are you familiar with the Swedish band kent? The lyrics I asked about are from their song Sundance Kid. Original: Det var en gång för så länge sen Du och jag slogs mot dumheten Vi följdes åt till våra drömmars stad Vind i håret och vår sikt låg klar Vi vis...

I'm translating the lyrics of some Swedish songs to English. Here's my take on the chorus of one of the songs: Can you hear it, can you hear it, can you hear it too? This goes out to you Can you hear it, can you hear it, can you hear it too? All we said, all we did Became a song for you My question ...

Here's a link to a very significant post from the best publically available source of information about oil on the planet: The Oil Drum . I can't say how close to the truth this projection is. I can say that after spending countless hours on that web site over the last few years and seeing the dedic...

Yeah, I think what I meant to say was, nationalism in sports is to actual nationalism as paintball is to actual war. It's a way to play tribalism/nationalism without the pitfalls and horrors of the real thing. Just like paintball is a way to play war without actually having to shoot someone. It's al...

And so, maybe, sports is to nationalism as computer games or paintball is to actual violence and war?

Does anyone know how well rice and pasta would keep stored in a pretty warm (in summer) attic? I have no idea.

Here in Sweden, gays can enter into 'registered partnership', which basically has the same legal implications as marriage. The debate is now about whether actual marriage should be allowed for gays. Politically this is not a big issue, and most of the people in leading positions in the Swedish Churc...
