Heh, it might be different for me, i got quite long fingers so i dont really feel the stretching all that much. But i do have a tendency to lean my wrist on the table when i am using the the number pad at the right of my keyboard and that hurts like hell after a while.

When i did my typing exam many years ago they never tought me how to do the numbers, so when i had to do a test i was using the numbers right below the function keys.
