The question is what public services do you want curtailed because the country is going broke? That is the best question in the thread. For most people it is "if it benefits me, don't cut it". I have been making use of the USPS lately...and some of the road improvements they have been doi...

But before we get too off-topic! The thing people seem to reject the most is the "mandatory." People like options. If you want them to pick a particular option, just make that option really appealing. "If you use our limiter, you get increased safety, better insurance rates, AND if yo...

As for why insurance companies don't lobby for lower speed limits...can't say. Perhaps they are just as evil as the government (big surprise) and don't do so because they stand to gain more if everyone is going too fast. How do they gain from that?? Shouldn't they want to minimize the number of col...

Except if you're regulated and going the speed limit while everyone else is going 10-15 above, you're actually more likely to be in an accident. That's what I was getting at when I said it would only work from an insurance perspective if nearly everyone was doing it. Speed is important in determini...

Before the insurance companies will give discounts, there'll have to be evidence that staying below the speed limit results in fewer claims. I really can't see that being the case unless nearly everyone is doing it. I think there have been statistic studies done for years on this very matter (speed...

Putting in these limiters would eliminate quite a bit of government revenue. When people don't speed, they don't get tickets and hefty fines. What is the government thinking!? Speed limits aren't there because they care about your safety: they're there to make money. But even if they do install such...

People who do the "black friday" shopping thing are foolish in general. You can get EVEN SWEETER deals ALL YEAR ROUND if you're a savvy online shopper. Ebay for the win.

Aww that's unfortunate. Well, as soon as you do start any Japanese lessons, let me know if you need or want help. I love helping the newbies. :D

Just a gloss on the one representative per 100,000 population. A month or so back I sent an e-mail to my MP on a local matter. I had a reply from him via his Blackberry within an hour that addressed the matter at some length and also showed that he knew me and my former employment. Now I'm not sayi...

Of course it needs to be addressed. It falls under "staying on topic" at the very least. Many discussion boards I frequent permanently (IP) ban users who "hijack" threads (i.e. change the subject, spam, harass other users), often without a warning (they expect you to read the rul...

Hey hey Pips. Long time no see. I haven't posted here in ONE OR TWO YEARS. But now I am back. Sort of. And ready to talk anything Japan. I get my BA in Japanese this Spring (hopefully) and I will be off to teach English in Japan (for at least one year) soon after that. I am really looking forward to...

Don't bother, Rebecca. Tosh, you're right that America does have some wiggle room with the number of representatives. I think a small increase might work at least to test the waters. Having more people won't affect the speed at which a good proposal gets through. Only the poor ones. IN THEORY, of c...

Oh well. Okay, Onizuka, how would technology help pass a bill in a 10k House? I don't need to hear about how they could be in different rooms and transmit over a WAN or LAN. That's not an issue. The nuts and bolts of how to get 10k people looking at each other doesn't factor into how to get 10k peo...

It isn't an issue of technology. The issue is about the number of representatives and what can be accomplished with any efficiency. But it is about technology. Since we have said technology, I believe 10,000 reps can work together smoothly. Numbers are no excuse anymore. from Onizuka Take Wal-Mart,...

435. That is how many members in the House of Representatives. Everyone jokes about how slow Congress works. Now double the House to 870. We've just gotten slower. 1 representative for every 30k people is ridiculous. A 10,000 person House of Representatives will never accomplish anything regardless...

using electronic votes is still fairly unsafe and too easily messed with. Plus it's heck of a lot easier to call some one on the carpet over a vote when they were actually in attendance of the meeting that was held. There would be too many representatives weasle out of unpopular votes if they could...

It would make it un-functional in the fact that a personal vote spoken by the person can not be contridicted. As an Adminstrator for a city, I would never and the laws would not allow me to ever, never, ever accept a vote from a City Councilor via email or fax or any electronic media. They have to,...
