Yeah, we've got Colorado and New Mexico now as holdouts from Jesus-Land. :) I agree it is quite obnoxious, but it makes the division in the land between faith based reasoning and reasoning based on evidence. Actually, division would probably benefit the godless liberals, since funds flow from those ...

SF, I heard David Gergen on CNN (I think) wondering if the country was even governable anymore, given the deep divisions and hatred. :(

as Ellie said. It doesn't actually say that anywhere. Rather, John Marshall interpreted the document as saying that in Marbury v. Madison in 1803, thus taking for the court tremendous new powers. And despite the fact that the constitution doesn't explicitly state that the justices interpret what it...

Why should I value a judge's decision over the Constitution itself? Because the Constitution itself provides for particular Judges (i.e., justices of the Supreme Court) to be the arbiter of the meaning of the Constitution. Can't. Really. Ignore. Parts. You. Don't. Like. And because we are a common ...

The Commerce Clause is one of the Article 1 Section 8 powers specifically delegated to Congress and thus its interpretation is very important in determining the scope of federal legislative power. You know, CG, you are just sticking mulishly to reading the literal text of the Constitution. However,...

Since I want the poor to be able to afford high quality health services, and the track record of government services is abysmal, the last think I want is government services in this area. Is what CG said. Below is what I wrote a few days ago: heard a piece on NPR quite a while ago that talked about...

TNT, it all comes down to "I don't want to pay for other people's healthcare," doesn't it? It's like my boss who makes over $500,000 a year, his wife just DID get a new Escalade giving away her 2007 Highlander to her daughter in law, who is a single issue voter. No taxes . :P I know you do...

If people decide to peruse a career that does not generate enough income because of altruistic reasons they have chosen a path that limits those choices. You know, I hear this from Republicans all the time. Problem is, that you have an economy that needs all sorts of people, from Walmart workers, h...

Ha. I agree with the  at state worker benefits. In private companies, it's use it or lose it, for the most part. Me, I'm an employee in the legal industry without paid sick, holiday or vacation time. I take the time, I don't earn the dime. :(

This is most blatantly obvious in the constitution writers' strong desire for a limited, hands off gov't, something which was explicitly written into the constitution. The constitution explicitly limits our Federal government's power to only a specific a list of powers. If it wasn't on the list, di...

I just wanted to add I arrived in DC on Friday afternoon and spend the weekend touring the sights with my 4 and 8 year olds. I found the Washington DC people shocked and sad. If you asked, they all were really upset (the bike cabs, with whom we took several rides, and other security guards we came i...

I found this article to be instructive: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31199889" target="_blank The article broke down the difference between what President Clinton's office projected to be the budget deficit in 2009-2012 (prediction made in 2001 as he left office) and what the current projec...

Agree with DaveLF. I think it is disingenous that many in the far-right are rushing to condemn the guy who gunned down Tiller, after calling him a "baby killer." It is very much akin to Al Qaeda. You get the people all pumped up with rhetoric about how hateful their "enemy" is, h...

We recently have been refurbishing a rental property that we purchased and we somehow found this fiftysomething white guy who never went to college and has made his living as a fed ex driver, used car salesman, and floor installer (I'm sure there's more), who's been doing a lot of the work. And he i...

The Supreme Court should be made up of the best members of our legal field without reference to the color of their skin or their age. If they are all black, white, Indian, older, or younger no one should give a damn. Well, the problem is that there is a pool of qualified jurists available which qua...

RELStuart, it's well and good to be gender and racially neutral when our institutions reflect our society. The current SCOTUS with its predominance of white males does not reflect our society. I don't want old white men deciding these issues--I want a court that reflects all perspectives, all member...

Freddy, I imagine it's both. There's a significant pool of qualified jurists that could be chosen, and then from that point on it's a political choice. Always is, under any administration, Republican or Democrat. She certainly is qualified, has significant credentials in her law career before appoin...

That is simple reality. If the positions were reversed and Canada was the sole superpower in the world, I'd love to see that. They'd ask politely before they invaded a country. Forget fighter jets....imagine the fighter snow machines! I'm perfectly willing to hand off the baton to Canada. Although ...
