Those berries are Haws, on a Hawthorne tree. Also known as the May tree, the fruits as May apples. Near where I live there is a 2 mile stretch where many years ago the settlers planted white and pink Hawthornes all along the edge of the pastures on both sides of the road. They make a nice syrup whic...

As I've said to you on the phone, with one or two exceptions (you, Jude, being one) everyone else I like to post with is at Hall of Fire.

Hall of Fire has its flaws, as I've said, but on the whole it suits me better than B77 and that's just the way it is.

Probably some of the beer evaporates and "marinades" the inside of the chicken. You could probably use the same technique with a can of something else. The Cooks Illustrated recipe suggested lemonade for those that don't like beer. The beer just evaporates. You don't taste it and it doesn...

For me, the issue is not so much GM seeds as the fact that Monsanto can and has patented them. It is worth watching Food, Inc. Monsanto is not the only almost-criminally powerful company in the agri-food industry, but it certainly the worst. Fewer and fewer companies own and control more and more of...

If you are using 1/2 as much again egg whites, you can't expect the recipe to work. If it does, something else is wonky.

But - don't beat for 9 minutes! You only do that if you are making Italian meringue.

Well, if the recipe calls for 1/2 cup for 4 egg whites, then you should use 1/2 as much again for 6: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 cup. That is almost certainly your problem. The sugar is not there only as sweetener, it is necessary to create a solid substance out of whipped egg whites. There's a chemical reactio...

I would guess you underbeat the egg whites. They must do more than hold their shape, they must reach the stiff peak stage. I would also suggest you add a little cornstarch with the sugar, as you would in making a Pavlova. It is possible to overbeat egg whites, but I think you'd know before you got t...

Tell me what you did and how you did it.

Meringues are simple and should be easier to make than you're experiencing.

I saw a very old Anne movie on tv once, but it wasn't that old. It starred an actress named . . . . Anne Shirley! And she was blonde!!!

Man, and I thought PJ changed stuff. :Q

Don't boxers drink milk and raw eggs when training? Aside from any danger of salmonella or other contaminants in raw egg, they are not healthy food for anyone. The uncooked white contains an enzyme that affects how your body utilizes some other nutrients. Cooked eggs are excellent food, however. I ...

If you're really worried, use frozen eggs from the store. They have those, don't they? They've been pasteurized.

Has anyone here ever canned pears?

Yes, many times.

I used a VERY light syrup, like 1 cup sugar in 5 cups water. Also, it is traditional to put 1 whole clove in each jar. My father-in-law really liked canned pears and I used to do them just for him.

No, Jude, I didn't. :( We had homemade fish and chips this evening. (We used frozen chips, though.) The batter was sensational . I haven't made deep-fried fish for many, many years and I had forgotten a few things. The pieces were too thick, for one thing. But the coating was so crunchy and good! If...

"temporary changes"? So, are you allowed to put toilet paper in the toilet paper dispenser? How can attaching a rubber hose to a faucet be any change at all?
