The welfare of popular animals is one of the few issues that can reliably cut across the political divide in the US. Given that I'm not surprised Trump reversed course.

Almost. From what you say, there is nothing stopping banks from doing this in the first place other than the capital they had. Yes, exactly. The same thought occured to me, and I knew there was something I was missing, which is why I ended my post on a confused note. I think I understand now. Maybe...

I am still very confused by this (I've re-read several times now). For one, I don't understand the relationship you're suggesting between the "investment arm" and the "lending arm". Why would the behavior of one change the other? In your first example the lending arm can expect ...

One of the targets of this is obviously Wal-Mart. But even if the section doing away with the secret ballot was passed nothing would change. Wal-Mart would still close any store where a majority of the employees signed the cards. They would still aggressively warn employees from signing those cards....

If Glass-Steagall was reinstated, what would happen to all the behemoth hybrid institutions that were created after the repeal? Would these have to be broken up? I am not opposed to that in principle, but what would the cost of that kind of thing be? Is it even feasible? Having read some about Glass...

Thanks, Lidless. I get it now. I was misled by your math even though there's nothing wrong with it. There are more loans at the 4% default rate. Which is obvious, but it didn't quite sink in at first. The profit margin doesn't go up but the size of the bank and the amount of profit does --- for awhi...

Suppose a bank has two divisions – investment and lending. The investment arm makes USD 2,000 on average, and the mortgage arm has funds of USD 100,000 to lend someone. With it, they expect to make USD 10,000 profit 97% of the time, and they expect the chance of a default to be 3%. The bank’s o...

*is terribly confused* Indeed. :D *thought Cardinals were baseball team* Yeah, well if the football Cardinals win the Super Bowl they will join the Baseball Cardinals as the most undeserving winner's of their sport's championship. The baseball Cards were 83-79 last time they won the World Series an...

I don't think Palin could write a book that I would find compelling. Maybe someone else could write a compelling book based on her notes and stories of the campaign. But the book would have to be true to be worthwhile, and that is not likely if Palin controls the story told in the book. The story of...

Girl sells her virginity to millions ... is that even possible?

Oh, wait, I was reading it wrong.

Well, it is a form of prostitution. It's a bit demented to pay that much money for anything, isn't it?

I think the thread title is being read wrong. You see, some punctuation and text formatting is missing. Last one to post "in this thread wins". In other words, a member named Last one ( who hasn't joined yet, what a shy guy ) is going to make a post which consists of "in this thread w...

Lurker: Did you even attempt to understand what I was writing? I did not say the man was justified. I pointed out that the police routinely threaten leathal force to prevent crime or apprehend suspects. And there might be cases where lives are shattered because of lost property. It's amazing how lit...

But hal , no one made a personal attack against democracy . He did make a pretty clear personal attack against themary . I think that's really the most relevant fact here. One can argue that some posters didn't react well to him, or against that, but no one treated him the way he treated others here...
