Jude, those red berries were haws from hawthorn trees. (Craetegus species) Though no one eats them nowadays, they can be made into a nice tasting fruit leather. My son's girlfriend gave us some commericial Chinese pastilles made from them.

I've got some pacharan that my daughter brought from Spain as a Christmas present. It is very aniseedy. Sloe gin made the English way is just....fruity. I had great fun tricking my kids into eating sloes when they were young. They distrust anything I offer them now  I don't think proof and pe...

I got lured into looking at some screen caps (by that temptress Di of Long Cleeve) and they looked so stunning I had to stop inspecting them. I want that shock of pleasure to happen in the cinema. But what I saw was darned good.

We don't get genetically modified foods here. I agree with that because although I have no disagreement with the scientific developments, I quite frankly do not trust the commercial interests behind GM at all. In fact I fear them. If a GM mistake made them money but caused a continent wide famine it...

So far I have been eating potatoes and the flavour is far beyond farm grown produce. We can't get enough of them. Also runner (pole) beans, climbing french beans, mangetout peas, broad (fava) beans including a red seeded variety, various colours and shapes of courgettes (zucchini), ruby red chard, b...

Berhael's elegy turned a visit to a graveside into a moment of grace and dignity. I shan't forget it. Nor shall I forget the tiny trinkets on the grave that spoke of so much love. One metal tag simply said, 'Thank you'.

I am as guilty as others for not contributing much for quite a while and it is the regular contributions of a range of interesting people that keeps places alive. I will say like others have said that I can be myself more comfortably here than elsewhere. Other places have good discussions too but yo...

I took over a half allotment in mid April. It's only a five minute walk from my house with a wheelbarrow. Despite torrential rain ever since, I created paths and raised beds and they have drained well and I have more than 40 different varieties of things in. I've dug up plenty of potatoes and salad ...

I'm not certain these have been posted before. Don't inspect them just before you go to bed.
