Maria Hobbit :D cool to see us wayyyyyyyyy on the top there

As to customizing: I think our immagination is our limit, and as to adding
goodies to the future site apart from the MB section, well, it's also limited
only really by our immagination (and budget for bandwidth ;) )

The phpbb guys have answered in the thread Eru started

quote
we have our own backup for the entire phpbber (daily, weekly and
monthly). unfortunately, we dont have any automated tools at the
moment to convert all the customized tables into the default phpbb
tables. that's where the $25 will come about, because we need to
schedule a staff to spend 2-3 hours converting those tables.

in the near future, you may have an option to upgrade to premium
members where you can have ads removal + daily sqldump.
/quote

It's somehow very calming to know at least THEY back up EVERYTHING
(all in one go) daily/weekly/monthly.

However, I would still like to know just HOW we would be getting our
backup. Surely not by a mailed CD :Q :LMAO: Could you please
enquire more specifically Eruname? Thanks :)

Alandriel, we might not get it physically at all--it might just be that they contract to store a backup file for us.

I find I have no idea how big a MB like this one is in terms of file size, but I suspect it won't fit on a CD.

Getting any in-thread banner ads? ;)

There's a thread on that in this forum, Ax. :)

But from what I'm reading on the other thread, that doesn't seem to be the fault of the boards, is it? I know I'm not getting them on my pop-up consumed work PC. I get ads everywhere else but not on the actual forum pages.

Prim--

I know, I was just using it as evidence. :)

I actually think having no ads is enough of a motivator to move...that and the control it represents. Who knows what phpbber will be doing a year from now?

I just did a quick run through the phpbber.com directory, looking at the dates that some of the other messageboards were started and the oldest I found was October last fall.

They haven't been doing this messageboard thing for long, and considering the space we take up, I'm wondering how long they'll keep it up.

A bit of shameless advertising: I've started to put a thread together in welcome B77 FAQ. Have a peek, and add if you know of anything I've missed. A lot of stuff is already in there, like answers to your question too Maria :)

Something that just occured to me while putting the FAQ together. Squiddy once mentioned that IF we have a backup of this MB, then when we move (not that this is anytime soon ;) ) then we could possibly use that instead of having to move everything manually.

Might any of the techies here be able to confirm that suspicion of mine?

In any case, I'm going to post back over at the thread Eru has started on the phpbb help board and see what comes of it.

[edit: 14Apr: board was hiccupping on me all last night - all phpbb boards - but I've posted it now and will check for answers]

This board will fit easily onto a CD. Very, very easily.

BTW - they are really going to hate us leaving (ie get less advertising revenue). Not only are we the biggest board, but we have 49% of all posts ever done on phpbber, and 56% if you include the deleted threads.

They'd hate us leaving? :scratch I figured they would hate us taking up too much of their space.

Just like TV ratings, they charge higher advertising rates the busier they can prove they are.

Now it might be that the revenue exceeds the costs of B77, maybe it doesn't. But either way it will be a big step back for them.

Well - I think Lidless might have something there. My 'feeling' is, they're pushing to get a premier service on the road with extra goodies (which are payable).
They''ve answered..... if you can call it an answer
Quote:
at the moment the $25 is a one time effort to create the sqldump.

in the near future, the price will be much lesser. and you'll be able to have an option to create sqldump, restore, and remove ads.
Do you understand this? I certainly don't :help: .. and it doesn't really answer my questsions (thread) and that bugs me...... guess I'll bug them some more :halo:

So I did nag some more and that's what they came up with in way of answer:
Quote:
you may find other free forum provider which provides free backup but seriouslly we dont think this method will work in the long run.

sqldump backup will use lots of resources. it may be fine with anything less than 10K.

in the near future, we will let paid members to do their own sqldump backup, ads removal, restoration (if possible) directly from their control panel.

at the moment, we will charge $25 for the backup, because we have to spend around 2 hours converting all the customized tables into the default phpbb tables.

next, we will send you via email or ftp (if the file is too big).

restoration is quite simple but we will always help if the person is having problem with restoration as long as he/she gives us his access to his/her server or virtual hosting account.

note: we have the entire phpbber backup done daily, weekly and monthly for our own security purposes.
That last sentence is VERY re-assuring and I'll include it in the B77 FAQ. :D

I guess, it would be our 'easy way out' once we move to the new site - but I'll leave confirmation of that hunch up to the techies here to verify. Of course it would depend on the software we'll use over at our site (compatibility issues I think) but we did talk about using pretty much this same software, only better and more customizeable.
I simply don't know enough about it as I'm far from a techie geek

[edit 16Jun05: we have requested a backup and the discussion has moved to We need a contingency plan ~ Alandriel]
