I just noticed over on phpbber.com in the tech support section that you can get your individual board backed up for a fee of $25.

http://www.phpbber.com/support/viewtopic.php?t=410

They back up the whole system daily, weekly and monthly, but apparently it is a 2-3 hour thing for them to back up a single board, so they charge for it.

Why, again, are we going to move somewhere else? Why not stay where it's free, since backup IS available?

Mostly because we hardly have any control over this board. We can change anything. It's very restrictive and many would like to customize this board. Why we wanted backup is so that we could move all the stuff here to the new board.

Very good to know that backup is available even if it costs money! :)

What Eruname said. Indeed it would be nice to have a number of customizations but in the interim there is nothing that prevents us from a bit of an investment having this site backed up. That's great news Prim! :D

Do you have a link to somewhere perhaps where the exact procedure is explained? I immagine they take credit cards.. but how would they do the backup? Somehow I don't think they'll send the payer a CD, or would they? :Q
Just goes to show I know nothing technical

Is the $25 per backup, or is it $25 per month to back it up weekly/daily/whatever? Just curious.

That's great news, MariaHobbit--that was always going to be one of the dangerous things about moving, not having a backup to restore damaged or lost files. Now we know we'll at least have that.

And what everyone else said about customization, etc. We can't even add any new smileys at this point.

That's not quite true Prim. You can add the smileys that phpbber has uploaded already. You cannot request for new smileys to be uploaded. So we could add a whole bunch of new smileys...have you been through that humongous list? :Q We just can't request to get our own special one.

I searched the phpbber boards about backup and couldn't find anything. I suppose I could start a new thread and ask how it works.

edit: I started the thread:

http://www.phpbber.com/support/viewtopi ... =2338#2338

I can post any questions you all want asked.

:) Fabulous! Thanks Eruname and while I'm here can I ask you wether you'd be open to some expansions of the training threads over at the experimental board? In a similar spirit as Squiddy has started them, but a bit more extensive? Perhaps we could swap some ideas over email or PM? Please let me know. Thanks :)

It's nice to know it CAN be done, even if it requires a bribe! ;)

There are a jillion smilies available. Thanks for labeling those "77" that you uploaded, Eruname. It made finding the old favorites easy. :)

Edit: Did you know we are THE biggest MB on phpbber.com? Just look in the directory, and you'll see. We have around 40,000 more posts than the next closest in size.

I wonder just how much room they'll give us?

What do we want to customize? (I'm not being snide; I genuinely don't know the answer.)

Well, one thing here that has been a problem for many members is the fact that unregistered people can read our memberlist. We can't hide it. It may not be such an issue when we're open, but it's been huge.

There are plenty of bells and whistles available for boards like these, I guess, that we can't have at a site like this. Squiddy knows a lot about that. But I think there are others who do as well.

Thanks, Primmy. :) I wonder whether, if we had our own website, there would be interest in having more then just a messageboard. For instance, I know there are a lot of talented artists and writers here. I wonder whether there would ever be an interest in having a gallery for art work and/or a reading room type place. There are a world of possibilities at what board77 could become, if people are interested.

And if we open after we switch to the new site, we won't need this feature to be customized. Just sayin' and all. I have nothing against the backup and such. Um, one question: do we all need to re-register when we switch?

I don't know, TED. It may be that we would have to reregister. That's certainly been the case with other sites I've been a member of that have migrated. A pain, but it does only take a few minutes. Though I kind of hope I'm not still an admin then.

Actually, no, I don't--I'd like it to be soon, and there will be no shortage of volunteers to help out with registrations.

You're right about the memberlist, but that was just an example of something that had been important that we couldn't change.

And Voronwe, at our own site we could ramify as we wished, I believe. It might be fun!

Ramification can be fun.

I thought an attorney would know that. :poke:

There's no reason why we couldn't link to B77.com for a gallery now is there?

Hobbies Directory List

I wonder whether they want something as big as us. We must be eating up vast amounts of their space.

I've been thinking for a while that it didn't seem worth the trouble to move to a new board when this board is really quite good. If we can backup our current board, I don't think it's worth it at all to move.
