I'd be happy to start as soon as you need me as long as you understand my absence for the middle 2 weeks. I'll be available for the most hairy part anyway, namely the week of opening.

Cheers,
Alatar

Cool, lotsa guys for Rangers next term - I hope you'll be suitably stubbly and unkempt! :D

Glad that you can make it, Alatar! :)

So, we're all set for July - and for August, remember that areanor has said she'd most probably be fine with taking the August term!

And now I hope that you guys are doing your homework on the experimental board, hmmmh? *stern teacher's look* I'll be around to check, shortly! :P ;)

That just isn't natural, Imp. You'll have to hand it over for safekeeping.
Do you want it in a brown paper bag? ;)

And I admit I haven't done much on the experimental board yet. I have honourable intentions, but not enough time. I'm taking a few days off for myself soon, though, so I'll put some concerted time into learning then. In the meantime, I'll just diddle around here and there.

Yes, and I said, I can do July, too, if it's needed. :P

Yes, but you preferred August, so August you get! :P

(Or have you changed your mind and would prefer July now? :) )

Can we please rename this thread to be consistent with the Charter to read:

Rangers and the Ranger volunteer pool

to be consistent with the name change....

and insert the link to the now uploaded Ranger Handbook on geocities. We're not crosslinking it from the Geocities Charter Index page but from this thread.

Link is: http://uk.geocities.com/b77_ad/Handbook ... ndbook.htm

:halo: I know I'm a regular pain in the backside

I'm updating my records before loading them into Michel Delving, and I noticed two things that I thought I should mention here:

1. The Europeans list dates as day/month/yr while the Americans list dates as month/day/yr. It doesn't matter which we use, but in Michel Delving I will definitely indicate which is being used. (Because I'm in the U.S. I'll use the U.S. system.)

2. There were a few people who were invited before we closed invites on March 4 but who did not register until after March 12 - the arbitrary cut-off date selected by the committee when we picked quorum numbers.

Frelga, for example, had indicated an interest in becoming a Ranger, but joined on March 17 and won't be technically eligible until September 17. We also decided, however, that people who had already served a term would be reloaded to the pool three months after the expiration of their term. We postponed reloading people while the volunteering process was going on in this thread, but when I enter the roster in Michel Delving, I will definitely reload them at that time.

Here's the question - should we give those five or six people who were invited by March 4 but registered after March 12 the opportunity to be loaded first? I know Eru is anxious to serve again ... and I don't know how many of those few stragglers are actually interested.

You know what? - let me check the memberlist and post their names here. And perhaps send them a PM? Or an email from the Rangers? If they are interested, they can say so in this thread, and I will load them in with entry dates starting September 13, and then load the former admins after them. This will not make a practical difference for the September term because we have enough volunteers for that, but it would mean that the October term would be filled by interested people who registered at the end of March before we would move to recycle former admins.

Does anyone object to this?

Jn (will load names in a moment)

Well, it's more than five or six people, but not all will be interested. These are the members who are active:

I agree. I wouldn't want to serve a second term before someone who's been here almost as long as I have serves a first one.

Agreed to letting those registered between March 12th and now go into the pool right now! :)

But as for using the date: please continue giving the name of the month, rather than the number, Jny!
I don't care whether it says 12th March or March 12th, but if it says 03/12, that'll just cause endless confusing for us Europeans even if we try to remember the US system is being used.
It's like giving the time of the clock in a 24-hours count to English-speaking people - it's easy as pie to those who are used to it, but others need ages to figure out what is meant! ;) :)

I've been posting dates like "24 June 2005"—clean, unambiguous, no commas. But that's spelled out. For lists, I agree with Hobby that using two numbers is confusing—maybe something like "22 Sep 05" would work?

Sure, that's beautiful! :)

But, as I said, if the Americans prefer "Sep 22", I don't mind either. (Although of course I prefer the way you wrote it: 22 Sep 05 - going from the smallest to the biggest unit. :D )

Absolutely, that's less confusing. I'll go through and convert the months to text, and I think it does read smoother in that format if the day comes first.

!Achtung!

Rangers - Alandriel pointed out that this thread should be locked before we open because none of the new people coming in will be able to volunteer for Ranger in this thread.

Meanwhile - those whose names are listed above, perhaps you could PM me if you do want to volunteer and you arrive after the thread is locked?

If I can get around to it, I'll try to send PM's to each of you, too, because I know that some of you already expressed interest.

Jn

[edit] post-lock to add crossreference to new thead in Michel Delving forum of the Ranger Pool
