Thanks so much for doing this, Alandriel—I truly would have been glad to take care of it.

I wonder if they're blanching a bit at the size of this place, compared to the boards they're used to? :P

Many thanks for doing this Alandriel. :)

Did you find out in what form the backup would come in..like if we wanted to move to the new site, could we move all the threads there?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeelll, the phpbb guys said there are two possibilities: either they send it as an email attachment :Q OR, I'll get a link from where I can then download it. A one-time kinda thing with a password.
Considering the sizeof this board, I don't think - or rather I seriously hope - they won't consider option one here.

As to just how we move things and for that we of course have to be ready first e.g. getting customization of the phpbb software out of the way first and being a registered entity according to Voronwe's plan etc.
... there is no easy answer to that, not before we see what we actually get lol. And now I'm going to spill a 'secret' =:) We have a b77 volunteer that will start looking into HOW things can be customized once we get the backup :D That will take time but when things are customized to what we need them to be, then we can seriously start thinking of how we'll move.

I expect a thread to be going up in this forum regarding all of this just as soon as we've got the backup and had a first nosey of possibilities. No worries - there will a place for questions and input suggestions (and more volunteers!) just as soon as ;)

Hi

I only joined so i could post some answers here for you as you seem somewhat confused with backups etc

I stumbled across this site by accident and started reading the backups thread, I used to run a fairly large phpbb forum site and was sole admin running backups etc etc so i thought id post some info here........

When you get a backup of your board from phpbber this will be in the format of a MySQL backup

It will probably be in the form of a .gzip file although this is not always the case

The backup is a database backup of your entire board this is all members, posts pm's etc etc

This can then be restored to a similar phpbb forum if you change websites etc

In most cases a backup is done with the phpMYADMIN utility although on this (phpbber) site i guess its not as their database probably contains more than one forum/group which is why they charge for your own personnel backup

For your board i would guess they will post a link to you for an ftp upload of your backup, if you havent got broadband then this may take a while.

For info on php Bulletin Board and all tech support which is free and if you set up your own site then take a look at

www.phpbb.com this is where the phpbb board was developed and is being supported

for info on the database then google MySQL and phpMyAdmin

Although both MySQL and phpMyAdmin can be heavy going

But don't ask her to sing "Let Me Entertain You." That's what we use to clear the house at midnight. :P

Prim's on vacation so I can get away with this, heh-heh

Seriously do stick around. We're in the process of approving the creation of a committee for technical support and you would be the perfect candidate for when these thorny questions arise.

Hopefully Mighty_Squid will stop by and see your post. She has her own messageboard for ... people who like to talk about messageboard technologies. The two of you would get on nicely.
