Of course a lot of damage would be done.

However, can I please reassure EVERYBODY here by quoting what the phpbb guys wrote in ther tech support here
Quote:
we have the entire phpbber backup done daily, weekly and monthly for our own security purposes.
At least that :)

That doesn't reassure me because that isn't what I'm worried about! :P

What I'm worried about is the possibility of a deliberate deletion of our messageboard without warning, by the authorities. We have been notified that this might happen if we meet certain criteria, the definition of which is entirely up to the beholder. .

The argument that we are so big that they wouldn't mess with us would make sense if we paid for this site... but we don't. We are just the biggest drain on their resources.

I think that at the very least an admin should collect all the email addresses and save them off-site so everyone can be notified if someday we try to find B77 and only get this response:

The page cannot be found

I've asked now how to get a backup and how to pay and will keep an eye out on that thread - so maybe that's a little way of reassurance Maria :)
I don't mind shelling out the money and no, I don't need any contributions (before anyone asks), you all give so much, this is but a little thing.

I'm sure one of the Admin's can make a backup of the membership list and the email addys just in case.... a bit of extra work, but why not indeed do it pre-opening ..

edit: because I typed post-opening when I meant pre-opening

Has anyone visited the Tolkien gathering message board? It has been going since the last gathering. Something happened with EZ board ad now 2 years of posts are gone!!!! It does not llok like they are coming back. I would feel better if there was some backup even if was out of date.

To answer an earlier question, I do have the charter and the Outside forum stickies on my hard drive.

That wasn't an argument Maria. I was trying to point out they are well aware of us by this point because we are the biggest board. It's not like they're going to be suddenly surprised about what's going on with this board.

My argument was that the head guy at phpbber has uploaded obscene smileys himself. That is why I'm not worried about us.

truehobbit, the threads are the people. Each post is part of a person. To lose that would be awful even though we could start again and it's not a sad point of view.

Griff, Here's the directory listing:

and then the one we're listed under:

Thanks for those links Eru, that's something I'll add to the FAQ :D

As to the latest posts in the tech help thread over at phpbb, I've not sent them an official email request for a backup. Soon we can all sleep a bit more easy ;)

Somehow, I shouldn't think that, the discussions going on here, even in the ToE, are what they mean by "pornographic, adult, or mature content" -rather, I'd expect that to mean all the kind of content that we decided not to have here either: explicit pics, erotic RP:s, and such.

But, backups and a contingency plan are always good to have in case of server crashes, which I also see as a more probable threat.

I see now what you meant, Eruname. :) Thanks for the clarification.

I worry because "Mature" is such a fuzzy concept that just the fact that we are going to label ToE as "not suitable for children" might be enough to doom us.

Once we open, all it will take is one angry troll to complain to the phpbber.com people and they will have to take a closer look at that forum. If they are already predisposed to think that it is over the top due to the complaint, then all they have to do is look at the thread titles to see that the subject matter is indeed "mature".

Whatever that is.... :scratch

I think they're a bunch of twenty-something geeks and I think they could not care less. I'm not saying it would not be prudent to back up—I just don't think anything is likely to happen.

Can they come onto our board with admin powers? I guess they must be able to. It's the only way they'll even see ToE.

Alandriel, did you mean that you have now sent them an official email request for a backup?

If you did, thank you very much. That is a very good idea!

And I really wouldn't mind helping you out with the cost. You have done so much already!

Anthy: yes. That's exactly what I did. I requested a backup via email as they instructed. Still waiting to hear back from them. I guess those geeks are a tad busy ;)
and thanks for the offer. But you know what? If you really want to help out then volunteer for the committee to go over the Charter (once ratified) with a fine comb :D There is still a lot of work to be done.

Edited to add: volunteers please present yourself Reconstituting the Constitutional Convention Committee :D

Maria's idea of having all addresses offline is a good one. I think we should execute that for any eventuality.

Where is that info stored now? Is there a list in the hidden admin forum?

Unless the new admins have put something together, no.

When I was an admin, whenever we needed an email I would just go to the user's info in the admin panel.

Making a list would be a good idea....though who would keep it? The Mayor whenever he/she is elected?

Obviously it would have to be kept off the board somewhere, and the Mayor makes most sense—the information would have to be moved only once a year or so, instead of every few months if a ranger kept it. There is also the issue that many copies of the list would eventually exist on various ex-ranger hard drives. We're supposed to treat those addresses as confidential information.

If the present rangers compiled the list, does it seem reasonable to everyone to pass it to Jnyusa to hold until the Mayor is elected? She's already keeping other Mayor-type lists.

Mayor is the best candidate for this IMO :) and since he/she will also be the one 'greeting' new members the list will be relatively easy to keep up.

I wish there was an easy, fast way to list those addresses. :( I feel guilty for proposing work for you Rangers that I can't help with.

I went over to my board and was playing with the admin tools, but didn't find any method other than opening the file on each member separately.

*sigh*

I also noticed a brother in law of mine -- who has never posted even ONCE-- visited again just yesterday. It's so frustrating, having lurker relatives who wont speak! That's a feature that I wish that everyone could have on this board, that of telling when someone last visited. I wonder why that isn't an option???

I have no problem with Jn keeping the list until a mayor is elected.

Maria, the rangers could divide up the memberlist. There's five of them and if they work together taking different parts they could get a list made quite quickly I'd say. :)

I've already got about three pages of email addys for people that are registered here, just from personal contact. So I don't mind adding the others, but I'll keep the those who did not personally give me their addies separate from the others because they should be deleted from my personal list when we have a mayor.
