I'm loth to bring this up as I wasn't here when these fora were named, but with the board opening I am wondering whether they should be renamed? I'm sure when they were named it was for a reason, but I wonder how many newcomers will appreciate that reason. I know it was one of the first questions I asked, and to this day the naming seems incongruous.

Anyway, I'm just gonna throw it out there for discussion and let someone convince me, or not, whatever...

*EDIT* I just realised this should probably be in Business. Can someone move it please?

Moved from the Jury Room upon request.

I'll comment when I have more time.

I would vote Yes to this. Particularly the long and clumsy Movie forum which everyone will just call Movie forum anyways. And I don't think it's arrogant of me to say that if I have no idea what either name means, that many others won't either.

And what's wrong with Latin? :suspicious:

A better question would be, what's wrong with English?

I think it's off-putting, frankly. Nothing wrong with Latin, but the joke even when translated is not . . . hilarious.

It's the Arts forum, and the Movies and Music subforums. Certainly there could be better, more clever names than that, but—still conveying actual meaning?

Change it to something like Moving Pictures instead of Movies, since TV gets discussed in there all the time.

And what is the joke, to those of us so gallingly uneducated to not know Latin?

Ars Pro Gratia Artis.

Still Latin (which mummpps loves) but recognizable to most, I suspect.

I had to Google it (the original title) and I've forgotten.

At least Jn's suggestion is recognizable to us non-Latin types. :)

I tend to call it the Latin Quarter ;)

I agree it needs a new, catchy name, one that will be automatically truncated into a single word.

Arts
Critic's Corner
Review and Commentary
The Armchair

But it's much more than reviews or criticism—that would be much less interesting.

At first I was opposed to this, but I see your point. If we must rename, then let's do something other than just "Movies", etc. I'm not witty or clever enough to come up with anything to suggest, but there are others here who are. As long as the names aren't boring, it doesn't bother me.

Perhaps the whole forum could be called "Ars longa, vita brevis." Still Latin, but very recognizable.

I am opposed - I like the long name and I like the memories of the old days when so many had latin sigs...

If ever "Ars gratia Artis"... for the whole forum.... and something nice for the movies, but please not just "Movies".

Please, allow some originality.

How about something that captures the term Sub Creation? It is a Tolkien concept. Perhaps The Realm of Sub Creation or something along those lines?

And I don't see yov's problem. He is from Latin America after all.

I'd prefer a name change. Some of laureanna's suggestions are pleasing. :)

I like the Latin ones - I think that's a really original idea! :)

Ok, I could accept changing the title of the movie forum, as that's loooong and the others around it are plain English, too - as long as we keep the name of the forum-group, because I think that one is really good! :D
(The "Dicisne"-one.)

yov, that argument "what's wrong with English" reminds me of my students asking why can't everybody in the world just speak German. I like the fact that there's more than one language around.

Why is it off-putting? If you don't know what it means, look it up, then you know. Or ask an oldbie - gives you a reason to make contact!

There is no hilarity in what it means - the joke is in the fact that it's in Latin. (Ok, and in the fact that there's of course no Latin word for "movie", so we just translated "moving picture".)

What Nin said - we just failed utterly at coming up with a good name for the History forum. For History that's ok, I guess - not a fun subject for most people anyway. But we shouldn't call the movie forum "movies" etc, too, now. :)

Besides, to a n00b "Hall of Fire" and "The Turf" are just as alien as "Vidistine..." ;)

Well, at least we should rename the Movie forum.

The overall forum title—it just means nothing to someone who does not know Latin. I am not an English chauvinist at all—I've put more study into foreign languages than most Americans ever do, and I've had my children educated to be bilingual—but the fact is that the language used in 99.5% of this board is English, and everyone here speaks it well.

Why not name things in a language that everyone here understands?

(Hall of Fire makes sense in English and sounds interesting, perhaps inviting, even if you don't know what it really means. The Turf is at least a meaningful word.)

Most people interested in participating in the discussions in the Hall of Fire would recognize that name and understand its significance. The same cannot be said of the movie and music forums.

I generally agree with those who think they should be changed, but this is not a burning issue for me.

Which of the Maiar was the creative one? Name it ____'s Realm.

I have to confess I never translated it, and never HAVE understood what it meant.

I just figured out what was in there, and then kind of ignored the title. I think this is what many people would do... although many of them would take the time to translate it, probably. <sheepish grin>

I'm kind of mulling over the thought that we should leave it, just to honor the firstcomers' decisions about this board.

Mulling...
