Dave: Thanks for the tips. Have tried refreshing broswer cache and will continue to try accessing the http address they've given me.

So far no luck and so far no further email from them :(
It's a zip file I'm supposed to be accessing directly. http followed by two pathways and then the named zip filed. I've tried 'shaving' off different bitts of the path to see if I can get in in that way - but that does not work either. Just keep getting the same error message.

Got another email from phpbb
Quote:
Hi There,
We sent you an email few days ago to let you know that there is a
problem
with the backup convertion. This is due to a very large forum you have
:(
We are trying hard to get yours asap. Please give us couple of days.
Thanks

I'm afraid we still do - for a little while yet. Still have not had another word from them except that 'we're at it' and this is a totally mad-busy week for me so I don't have time to engange into an email ping-pong match.

Please keep this annoucement up for another week and lets keep fingers crossed we finally get our backup.

These guys aren't that great. Can't wait until we can move to our own space.

Got another email from them Saturday (only saw it today for I've been just too busy elsewhere). It says:
Quote:
We've just managed to fix bugs on our forum converter.

Your backup will be created within the next 72 hours.

We apologize for the very long delay.

Thanks.
so....... today is Monday. I hope this will finally be going through
Will keep you updated of course.

The board was down all morning (EDT). Hopefully that was it.

But my family forum on phpbber.com was down too. And I couldn't access the main page of the phpbber.com site either.

I don't think it was us.

So has it been done yet?

Can you tell I'm ready for this Global annoucement to go away? :P

No... I'm afraid not. Nothing new. The last two emails I've sent remain unanswered. I'll poke them again

Given the difficulty you have had getting this one single backup I'm strongly suggesting that we do an instant jump to the new domain as soon as we have it. It should take less than a day to handle the backup restore on a new site and to run a sanity check on the groups and permissions. I'm sure there will be a few teething problems but I feel it's worth the inconvenience to ensure that we don't lose posts in the process.

Who knows how long it will take to get another backup or even if the guys at PHPBB will be able to support the size of the backup required in a few months.

Do we have anyone here experienced in setting up a php board?

Should we maybe set up a practice board there under our domain name first?

I've done it a few times. It's fairly painless. Of course, I've never done one of this size and complexity, but to the best of my knowledge all of that info is contained in the Database Dump.

Perhaps we need to discuss some of the issues involved in moving to our own board (if anyone wants to split this into a new thread, feel free).

Some things that come to mind: We should have daily backups, so that at the most, we lose a day's worth of posts.

The backups should go to more than one person. (a disgruntled person who has access to the only backup, and has ftp access to the site, could permanently erase the messageboard :Q )

I understand that there is an email list of all active members. Is this kept only on the messageboard, or do people have it on their hard drives? I'm just thinking that if the board fails, for whatever reason, somebody should be able to communicate with everyone regarding the restore progress and instructions.

Someone expressed concern about private messages being visible in the database backup file. A mysqldump file is in plain text, so unless the database is encrypted (does anyone know if it is?) then the file can be opened in any text editor, including Notepad. It might be wise to instruct members not to send anything of a confidential nature via PM. When necessary, ask the recipient to delete the message upon receipt, and remember to delete it from your own Sentbox.

That's all I can think of now as I rush to get ready to leave for the day. I'm sure everyone will have more input.

IIRC, there's something in the charter about forming an IT-experts committee when such things need discussing - just sayin'. ;)

:) Hobby is right.

Jude: it's still early days for that but your point(s) raised are very valid. We've been over this before a few times and I have some notes (if I find them) also about more points, or rather -important fine-tunings - that will need addressing by the tech guys.
Thing is - first we need the dratted backup from phpbb to even begin with all of this and something tells me that it will yet take some time

However, having said all this, if you and Alatar are in on this why don't you form a subcommitte (tech stuff) and see who else might be able to help. That way, once we have the backup, you guys are ready to test-drive things... and then we'll need another committee about the moving and new set-up and all that. I don't see any harm though in the tech side of things getting a headstart :) so long as you don't get in over your heads with 'possibles' and we still don't have the backup.

As to practise board - I think its a good idea though perhaps not really necessary considering Alatar previous experience. Whatever practice board you'd set up would be fairly small - b77 is much bigger but perhaps that does not matter from the tech-side of things. In any case Lidless needs to be in on this too then, since he's currently the owner of board 77 dot com and would need to give access. Perhaps you'd like to shoot him a PM?

Lidless has already given me access to the B77.com address and I've set up a basic PHPBB there already. We just need to try a dump and restore to see how much info is carried. I'll get onto Jude and maybe IdylleSeethes would be interested also? There's certainly enough tech knowledge between the three of us to handle this.

:D fab! Can you then please get a new thread started, right here in business and form that tech committee?
It would be great to keep a list of 'running fixes' in the first post of such a thread and keep it updated for quick and easy overview/reference.

... and I just hope the phpbb guys get off their backsides - and soon!

.. and I see Alatar has taken the initiative - Thanks! :D

Thread for technical discussion regarding board 77

Have at it. I'll let you know the minute I get something from phpbb.
