Friends, for some days now I have been thinking about a problem with one of the threads we let stand as a result of the vote taken on the fate of the old TORC-related threads.

I have finally brought it up with my Ranger-colleagues, recent and former, as well as our honorary Mayor and the board-owner, and found that some had come to the same view of things.

We have therefore decided to re-open the discussion on this thread.
In order to protect both the discussion and the thread in question (which contains private information) from googlebots, the discussion is taking place in the Bike Racks.

Please go here to discuss.

as well as our honorary Mayor
Have I missed an announcement somewhere? This is the first I've heard of the mayoral position having been filled.

Leoba, until we have the charter finished, and the procedures on how to elect a mayor ratified (which should be sometime this month, when we will start electing a mayor), Jny has agreed to act as temporary, honorary mayor. :)

Deleted, because I can see where this is going.

*sigh*

Folks, we need someone to send e-mail greetings to new members.
We need someone to keep the lists of the Ranger/Jury/Mediator pools.

We can't wait performing these duties until we have agreed on how to elect a mayor, and then in fact elected one.

We will elect a mayor as soon as the procedure for doing this is ratified.

Do you really see a problem with letting someone do the job in the meantime who knows what's to be done inside out?

I think what Leoba and Din objected to was not necessarily the fact that an honorary mayor was decided on, but the fact that this wasn't announced across the board. I agree, by the way. Would have been nice to know, I guess.

I wasn't objecting to the fact - I can't think of anyone better placed to do it than Jny in any event. I was just expressing surprise at the way it had come about and that I hadn't noticed her 'investiture' before. Indeed I still can't find the post where it was decided upon.

It would, as Farawen points out, have been nice to know. :)

Well, the Michel Delving forum has been there for something like 17 or 18 days, and its pretty clearly spelled out there. Plus, there was much discussion about this in the convention when both of you were active members of the committee.

V-

In this case, I don't think it's fair to expect everyone to be either poking around in a new forum or hanging with the convention. I don't think it's a huge deal either, mind you. But a quickie sticky would have been (and still might be?) appropriate, not so much an ANNOUNCEMENT as a polite btw...

It was an oversight, that's all. Yes, it should have been announced. But there have been a lot of stickies and announcements in recent weeks, and some complaints, so perhaps that's why it didn't occur to anyone to put up another one. :P

Thanks, Axordil, you've struck exactly the right note. You're quite right that it's not too late and that it would be a courtesy to those members who don't have the time or inclination to read everything, but who trust the current admins to at least flag important stuff up in the Business Forum for them.

I know, I'm too used to being spood-fed.

True, it should have been said in an announcement - sorry about that! :)

On the other hand, if a whole shiny new forum gets overlooked, I guess an announcement doesn't have a much better chance of being noticed. ;)

Well, the forum is labeled "for the mayor's business." So even I assumed it was just a test forum for now, which was silly, but I suspect a not uncommon error.

And we may be hitting the level of diminishing returns with stickies, now that you mention it. :D

Well, an announcement more can't hurt, can it? :D

So I added one to this forum. :)

:D thanks!

This doesn't mean jnyusa has to go into the west when the new mayor gets elected, does it? :bawl:

Glad you like it. :)

She might take a well-deserved holiday, looking a bit like this:

Actually, the title Honorary, Temporary Mayor is a bit tonge-in-cheek, Leoba.

I asked committee members whether they would mind if I set up the Michel Delving Forum because I had a fairly clear picture in my head of how to do it in such a way that the Mayor's job would be a once-a-week thing. People agree to that readily, but it meant that I had to use the screen name Mayor to do it, and I didn't want to be posting under that screen name and giving people the idea that I had been appointed or elected.

There's nothing official about the position until we hold elections, and if you're reading the thread in Bike Racks you'll notice that I'm not acting as Mayor for any purpose other than keeping the records updated. For all other official purposes, we simply don't have a Mayor at this time and won't have until we elect one.

Once I got the forum set up, it seemed reasonable for me to continue keeping the records in it updated ... otherwise the Mayor would come in on September 22 and have to process everyone who had joined since July 27. Not nice of us to do that to someone.

The other consideration is that I'll probably be the one to write the Mayor's Handbook - no one else has leaped forward to do tasks like that - and it has been really helpful to me to use the forum and interact with the Rangers to find out what works and what doesn't work. With the other Handbooks, we had people who had already done the job and could give advice how best to do it, but with the Mayor we're still figuring it out.

Right now the Mayor screen name is restricted to posting in Michel Delving and Outside. The Mayor cannot roam the board and post under that screen name because ... well, because I'm not really the Mayor. I'm just a place holder.
