Recently my hard drive took a fatal dive and I had to do a complete system restore. Everything's working now, but there's an annoying glitch:

The computer refuses to remember my log in, even though I check the little "remember log-in" box every time. I'm assuming something in my settings or firewall is preventing this, but I can't find it. I appear to be set up to accept cookies. My firewall/antivirus/antispyware program is the latest version of Norton Internet Security. (I had been using Norton before the crash, too.)

Can anybody tell me what settings might need to be changed?

Longshot: If your system clock is incorrect, it could be expiring your cookies as soon as they are set.

edit: Checking if other sites can set cookies for you (webmail etc) will help diagnose the problem.

I'm using Internet Explorer, and my clock appears to be correct (at least the clock that shows on the desktop is right).

Earlier I logged in to TORC, then exited. When I went back to the site, I was automatically logged in. No problem there. At a different site, though, it's the same problem as here.

Very confusing...

You want confusing? Last night, as I was trying to don the administrator’s costume, I was actually unable to log out. Couldn’t logout here or on the experimental board. Damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. I eventually fell back on the old “delete the cookies” standby, which worked.

Don’t know what to tell you Wampuscat. I’m really not a technophile.

I could send you another PM! :)

Hmm. I've seen what you describe on other browsers, but never IE, since everyone builds their cookies to work with IE.

Your PMs are always welcome, tinwe! :) Obviously you are never meant to log off. You are here for life.

Oh dear. Does that mean I'm not meant to log on?

Thanks for trying, Ax.

Perhaps it will just remain a mystery. (cue the Twilight Zone music...)

You know, a few months ago that would have had a completely different meaning for me.

:LMAO:

The same thing as to tinwe happened to me earlier today!

I deleted some cookies, so of course I was logged out when I got back, but I've never had that problem before, with any site, no matter how much stuff there was in my "temporary internet files".

Personally, I think phpbber's software has some bugs - we are currently getting the third update within two weeks (in the admin panel you get messages about that) - and that looks like they're trying to solve some problems, I think.

(That said: :Q at the idea with the PC clock and the cookies - I'd never have thought of such a thing, but it makes sense.)

Here's an interesting twist. I registered yesterday at another phbber message board, and my log-in there is successfully automatic. So what is it about this board that's keeping it from happening? Is there a setting I somehow changed?

Mine is automatic. I use IE, too. Hmmmh - are you sure you remembered to tick the box?

I'm wondering whether anybody else is having that problem.

I finally quit ticking the box since it was an exercise in futility. I'll check it next time with crossed fingers while whacking the computer with a salmon. Maybe that will help.

:(

:help:

I don't stay logged in either. *sigh*

Yes, I click the "stay logged in" box, but it doesn't work. At least I only have to type the letter "t" and then the rest of my name and password is obligingly filled in for me. I can choose to stay logged in or not, it doesn't matter, because I don't.

Interesting thing is, I recently joined Netflix, and had a similar problem. I clicked "remember me" but noooo. I had to always type in my complete user name and password, nothing less would do. But a few days ago, for some mysterious reason, I stayed logged in.

I am hopeful that someday, some reason, I will be allowed to stay logged in here too. :help:

This is the only place that won't remember me. Sigh.

But you give me hope, Duffster. Someday...

I'm not sure that this could be a board problem because many of us are ale to stay logged in. It's very odd.

 backatcha, V.

I'll definitely settle for compassion if a solution is nowhere to be found!

Here's another twist: I haven't been getting notifications about threads I used to be notified about ... until I visit those threads again. Then I get the notifications. Weird. Maybe B77 will automatically log me in after I succeed in visiting all the old threads.

Somehow this feels more like superstition than science. Must appease the phpbb gods.
