So, does that mean that Prim would be willing to accept a nomination, too?

Alandriel, same here!
I could think of a lot of people who'd make great mayors, but I'm not in close enough contact with anyone to even remotely know whether they'd be at all interested, so I feel silly PMing people out of the blue.

Viv and Hobby (), there is nothing in the Charter that would prevent people from stepping forward and announcing that they would be interested in serving as Mayor. :)

Actually, that means I'm the one person on the board who can't run for Mayor, because I'll be running the election. :) Which suits me just fine.

As for nominations, the charter says that a member can nominate or second only one candidate, but it doesn't say members cannot nominate themselves. I seem to remember that being discussed, and agreement that it was reasonable for interested candidates to be able to step forward on their own.

As the local Loremaster concurs :D , I think that this point should be made clear to everyone.

Can I de-nominate myself pre-emptively? :D

I'm not sure I agree that a person can actually nominate themselves, but they can certainly use this thread to express their interest in the office, and then anyone who agrees they would be good for the job can nominate or second them.

One does not typically nominate one's own self ... the idea of the nomination and seconding motions is that there are two other people who support the candidacy of this person.

Article 4, ¶1:
"To be eligible, a candidate must be 18 years of age or older, a registered member for six months, and be nominated and seconded by two other members."

I thought that people might be shy to put themselves forward in public but would at least contact a friend or two by PM and ask to be nominated.... but if some of you have been out PM'ing volunteers without success, it might be that the year-long commitment is daunting to folks.

Well ... let's see how it goes. We are an experiment in participatory democracy :D and we've been as flexible as we needed to be so far, thankfully. Transfer of the Mayor i.d. worked very well between Eru and myself ... I don't see any problems with the Mayor-elect appointing help for short periods of time, and that might get more people interested in the office and comfortable with the record-keeping. As far as permanent assistance, though, or a shorter term of office, the way things are set up now the Mayor can propose it but it has to be handled as a Charter Amendment.

Article 4, ¶1:
"No provision is made for selecting an Assistant to the Mayor, however if a current Mayor decides that an Assistant Mayor is needed to fulfill the duties of this office, he/she may propose that the Charter be amended to provide for a selection process and the standing Committee for Charter Amendments will convene according to Article 7."

Actually, I don't concur, Prim. As Jn has already pointed out, the Charter pretty clearly requires nomination and seconding by people other then the candidate herself. However, the Charter also makes it clear that a person needs to accept the nomination. Needless to say, no one can be compelled to act as Mayor ;). All I was meaning to say was that there is nothing in the Charter that prevents someone from coming forward and saying "if nominated I will run, if elected, I will serve." :)

Sorry for the confusion.

All the people to whom I sent out 'mayoral' feelers turned me down. :( Why, oh why, do the people who would be wonderful for the job step back from it? :(

I'll go do some more touchy-feely :D I may get a bite. ;)

ETA: And I'm glad that Eru is running! :D Would be more fun if there was someone else to run as well, though - would make for some very fun campaigning.

They should know it's not all that hard of a job once things have been explained.

Friends, if you are thinking you might like to run for mayor, tell a couple of other members and get yourself nominated today. If you know someone who's interested that you'd like to see run, speak up now!

We are in the final hours of the nominations.

Prim - just one thing before I take off for Boston - there is no quorum requirement stated for the Mayoral election. That should make life easier!! :)

I'll vote when I get back.

Nominations are now closed!

There is one candidate, Eruname.

Although it might be efficient to simply declare her the winner, as temporary Mayor I feel I would be remiss to countenance so Saruman-like a choice. The office of Mayor of the Shire was certainly never about efficiency, and in that spirit we shall press on with the ceremonial steps.

Furthermore, the process culminates in an inauguration party on September 22nd (a notable date), and as I had to miss the opening party on the 18th of August, and my prepared remarks languish undelivered, I very much hope that we will have the party and that the remarks (which over time have acquired an interesting degree of embellishment and some astonishing footnotes) will indeed be presented, to the edification of all.

Oh, and the new Mayor may have something to say as well. :D

Therefore, I am officially requesting a couple of volunteers to help me write the ballot and count the results. The vote will run from September 3 to September 12. My dear fellow members, if you have been waiting for a nice soft volunteer job, ending in a party, your wait is over. Just PM me (either the Mayor or Primula_Baggins) or post here to volunteer.

Thank you!

—Prim

Because there's no need to parody it, Prim. I know you're handcuffed by the process, but I feel more and more in Gullivers Travels than in B77.

Lidless, it was imagined as fun. As a community activity. You don't need to make fun of fun.
