I'm not sure I agree that a person can actually
nominate themselves, but they can certainly use this thread to express their interest in the office, and then anyone who agrees they would be good for the job can nominate or second them.
One does not typically nominate one's own self ... the idea of the nomination and seconding motions is that there are two other people who support the candidacy of this person.
Article 4, ¶1:
"To be eligible, a candidate must be 18 years of age or older, a registered member for six months, and be nominated and seconded by two other members."
I thought that people might be shy to put themselves forward in public but would at least contact a friend or two by PM and ask to be nominated.... but if some of you have been out PM'ing volunteers without success, it might be that the year-long commitment is daunting to folks.
Well ... let's see how it goes. We are an experiment in participatory democracy
and we've been as flexible as we needed to be so far, thankfully. Transfer of the Mayor i.d. worked very well between Eru and myself ... I don't see any problems with the Mayor-elect appointing help for short periods of time, and that might get more people interested in the office and comfortable with the record-keeping. As far as permanent assistance, though, or a shorter term of office, the way things are set up now the Mayor can propose it but it has to be handled as a Charter Amendment.
Article 4, ¶1:
"No provision is made for selecting an Assistant to the Mayor, however if a current Mayor decides that an Assistant Mayor is needed to fulfill the duties of this office, he/she may propose that the Charter be amended to provide for a selection process and the standing Committee for Charter Amendments will convene according to Article 7."
