Then let us by all means reiterate the suggestion! I hadn't realized you'd made it earlier. I am foggy.

Announcement or no, I suspect it will happen again. But hopefully, some good sheperd will come along and guide the flock back onto the path.
What else can you do?
Actually the only other thing I can think of is to create a separate forum and give permission to post only to those involved in the dispute.

Well, it would not be a problem to make the BikeRacks a permission-to-post place like the Jury Room. Just flipping a toggle in the All_Users group permissions.

The only problem is that it would prevent spontaneous use of the BikeRacks and would make it cumbersome for people to be added to threads there.

Maybe the announcement idea would at least make the problem better?

Master Holby, I was about to say basically the same thing: that an extreme solution would be to make the Bike Racks read-only, and only grant posting right to those directly involved. I'm not necessarily advocating such a solution, but it would solve the problem of people posting in the Bike Racks when they are not supposed to.

Thing is ... the human factor will always be there. People post without reading. They just do. Always will. :)

There's probably no way, as Holby says, to prevent those first few butts from showing up in the thread and the best thing to do might be just to reconcile ourselves to re-administering the gentle reminder each time this happens. Unless someone knows how to modify human nature ...

Another idea that someone brought up back then was to put something into the thread title i.e. "So-and-so, such-and-such PRIVATE DISCUSSION, ASK BEFORE POSTING IN THIS THREAD. YES YOU. NO YOU CAN'T"

I'm with Jn—I would urge sticking with the patient reminders. Maybe combined with some lurid thread titles.

The thing is, making the BikeRacks read-only automatically makes the BikeRacks something the Rangers control. Which is just what we were trying to get away from! Sure, the Rangers should patrol it closely when it's in use, but if it's a tool for the members, it should be freely accessible to the members.

With all the hassles that entails.

Or. . . . perhaps all that's needed is an announcement post in the BikeRacks headed "Thinking of Posting in a Thread Here? Read Me First!" with a clarification (and emphasis) of the rules.
Isn't this essentially what the Bike Racks sticky is (or is supposed to be)? I think the above would be a better title than 'How to Use the Bike Racks'. I think the 'Read Me First' sticky in ToE is very attention grabbing. And I'm all for revising the sticky to make things clearer. Nice big, bold type, perhaps, for the crucial points.

I would oppose making the Bike Racks read only, for the reasons stated.

I like the idea of a reminder in the thread title.

I promised Holby a while back, in a PM, that I would post something in this thread, but I never did. Honestly, I just haven’t had the time to keep up with it. But I will offer this - the only announcement / sticky thread that I have ever seen, the only one that got my attention enough to actually read it, was the one in the Virtual Tolkien Study Group forum that, I believe, said “DO NOT POST IN THIS FORUM UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS THREAD!â€

Wait! More has come back to me...

In the last thread there was also a suggestion (from Frelga?? I believe??) to title threads so they would read something like:

PRIVATE DISCUSSION ONLY: between Joe and Jane

or COMMUNITY DISCUSSION: initiated by Joe and Jane.

===

How about we combine some of these suggestions?

1. A neon Sticky Thread title

2. Explicitly stating in discussion thread titles who is welcome

3. Incuding a neon sign in the first post, to whit: "Don't post at all unless you are one of the initiators or you have overt permission to do so from one of the initiators.

Can't do much more than that.

I agree; Bike racks should be accessible to all; we just need to be clear about self-restraint.

*Preens that Tinwe wants to steal her old sticky note title*

I like putting the scope of the thread in the title, so long as we make sure everyone knows that "private" doesn't mean "unwitnessed."

How about "Closed Discussion"?

Tip-toe to the window
By the window, that is where I'll be
Come tip-toe thru the tulips with me

Tip-toe from your pillow
To the shadow of a willow tree
And tip-toe thru the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away

And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight, will you pardon me?
And tip-toe thru the tulips with me

Come tip-toe thru the tulips with me

To the shadow of a willow tree
And tip-toe thru the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away

And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight, will you pardon me?
And tip-toe thru the tulips with me

And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight, will you pardon me?
And tip-toe thru the tulips with me

Just sayin'.

Or, how to get to 5,000 posts without really spamming. :P V's rank seems strangely appropriate right now.

Of course, nonsense is what you make of it, as well (commonly known as "the Bombadil rule").

We need a thread on that!

The Bombadil Rule ... that would go really well with donuts and the Magic Beach Blanket.

Well I'm actually still planning to start a serious (or at least semi-serious) thread in the Hall of Fire on Bombadil some time in the near future, to Alatar's great dismay I am sure. :)
