Beth, I would say that you need to post words of wisdom like those more often...if they were not so wise that they really needed to be said only once.

Coming from one of the wisest and most generous of hobbits, that is great praise, indeed. back at ya!

TH: Thanks to another indomitable halfling for noticing my words.

hal and all--

Intent is an odd thing online. Things intended capriciously are perceived maliciously...and vice versa. It's one of the reasons that apologies are so common and yet somehow never tiresome...because ultimately most of us are pretty decent people at heart.

Expanding on the Ideal Board/Board That People Want It to Be/What Some People Want from a Board Theme from a few pages back because it rang all kinds of bells with me:

I think... I think... what has been happening here in the past, and may still be happening sometimes, is that the idea of a board that someone has clashes with the "harsh" reality of everyday b77-ness.

I certainly was (am? have been?) guilty of that. After That Other Place went troppo, I wanted The New Board to do better. Nay, I wanted it to do perfectly. (Can't speak for everyone obviously, but I'm boldly assuming here that I wasn't the only one. Too... outré. :Q) And for that very reason, I just couldn't do all the other things that you do on a messageboard when someone behaves in a counterproductive manner. (Counterproductive from *my* POV I hasten to add.) I could have, and probably should have, tried ignoring certain comments, or certain posters altogether. Not taking things seriously. Letting things slide. Yet I found myself defending this board and finally didn't even know against what - or whom. The end of it was that I couldn't enjoy this board anymore. It was too much hard work. Everytime some nastiness broke out on here, I felt like I had personally failed, kinda, in making this place safe and shiny.

I HATE failing at stuff.

Anyway. I guess I should have tried being more patient. I should have stopped trying to make this board perfect. It isn't. It never was. It never will be either, I guess.

But where's the fun in being perfect?

I think I understand. The best is often the enemy of the good.

 I was gonna yell at you for coming into a thread that would just make you more frustrated with the place... now I have to hug you for saying all that...

I think we should always always stand up for what we think is right. But we should be ready to find that it may not be possible...and to know what that means to us. In some cases, it might be so big and important, that we won't be able to stay. In most (I hope) cases, it won't. It doesn't always mean we can't stop fighting for what we want, either...just that our fight might have to change methods. I think a lot of things that can't be changed by a vote or a consensus can be changed by people setting an example of their good habits, and also just telling people how they feel, if something happens that they don't like...I can't say I think this place is perfect, nor that it will ever be- but that doesn't mean 'everything goes'.

It's so complicated.

Unfortunately, perfection, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder.

Sticking around?
I mean I know we are loathsome creatures and all, but you do seem to fit.
Well I think so anyway. :)

Sure, try to convince Farawen to stay by calling her a loathsome creature. Oh wait, maybe Holby's right. ;)

Loathsome or not, I hope to see you around more, too.

:)

But! It ain't a question of loathsome creatures or imperfect boards, it's a question of Farawen's perspective, and the screwed-up-ness of same.

Although I'll be the first to admit that I'm both imperfect and loathsome.

Ro, far be it from me to curb your youthful uh, enthusiasm, but I wasn't really thinking in terms of a three-some. :Q I don't... bend that way.

Maybe you wanna ask Becca to join you? She could bring Marty. Have yourselves a four-some!

I'd so sell tickets to that.

Prim, I still owe you an email. I suck like a sucking thing.

Oh, I was only going to let you and Holby work it out. You, Holby, and the camera...
