Holby, that's great.

But scroll down to the end, the detailed analysis of the last 20 posters. That info seems sensitive to me. Any way to hide it?

We have no control over the site whatsoever or any of the details.
Just know that anyone with a website can use tools to determine where the visitors stem from.
I ran a site a while ago and I use to track "hits" to see what pages the visitors were viewing. I could also tell what browser, screen resolution, and yes the domain name.
Every site on the internet is capable of doing that so the information is really not sensitive. You can't really hide on the internet.

I know that, Holby. ;) I run a website (well, DH does, mostly). I know every websites keeps hit logs and such, that's how they get paid by advertisers, and yes I know they keep IP addresses.

What I'm concerned about is that here the visitor IP addresses are visible to the world, along with the pages that person visited.

Well until this gets hashed out, I have taken the link down.
I believe that only Rangers can see the link otherwise.
I wish there were a way to limit the stats, but I don't think there is.
It may come down to someone copying and pasting the hits etc., and leaving out the other stats.
I wonder if it is possible to visit the phpbb site and view stats for other messageboards. If so then the info is already available to the world.
Must investigate.

The stuff that was showing which usually only a Ranger could see was just the ISP addresses, right, Holby?

I don't know how 'sensitive' that info is ... people can mask their ISPs by going through anonymizing servers. When you send an email, all that info is accessible to the recipient. It might just be a TMI issue, a courtesy you know, that only Rangers can see it under usual circumstances. Anyway, anyone here can become a Ranger and have access to it.

Jn

p.s. I'm not arguing that you should put it back up ... just speculating as to how private it really is. then again, we allow people to not show their email address, so maybe it really should be private info.

Well it isn't private.
Every site you surf to has that same info. We leave footprints all over the place when we surf. One of the reasons spam is so effective.

I am going to err on the side of caution until there is more discussion about it.

Jn,
The link shows the IP address, the browser, operating system, screen resolution, and each page the last twenty visitors displayed while at b77. I guess it could have limited use as a spying tool - if you figure out who someone is based on their IP address, then you can decipher what pages they visited on their last trip to b77. It's not especially sensitive information, but I'm with Frelga on thinking that maybe it is better hidden.

Yes, definitely should be hidden, I think.

No problem about the Rangers having access, though, they can see lots of detail from the Ranger panel anyway. :D

So, is this a new button you can make visible to all or where is that new feature located?

So there is now a link to "forum statistics" at the top of each forum. Is that what y'all are talking about?

Seems like it. It doesn't look like any IPs are available...not sure.

I got popups galore when looking at the stats though!

V,

Yes it is, and I just got a long string of nasty looking virus warnings from the pop-ups Eru mentioned. And my pop-up blocker is on.

It seems as though phpbber has decided to make this something available to everybody - I can’t find anything on the admin panel that allows me to turn it off, but I’d recommend staying away from it until they fix the damn virus problem.

Eru, could you contact them to point out the virus problem? Someone needs to tell them about it.

Unfortunately, there do appear to be IP addresses, when you click on the detailed analysis of the last 20 posters link. :(

Virus problem? Great.

Voronwe, I should have been more specific. IP numbers, what you use to track a computer are not being shown. IPs as in Internet Providers are shown...like a user uses aol. I don't believe any harm can come of that. I do not believe there is anything trackable. There are no numbers identifying computers.

Actually...no some numbers are being shown.

Eru, if you go through a large provider like AOL, then yes, all you see is the something.aol But I also saw some IPs from universities, gvernment organizations, what looked like corporations and one military IP.

I don't know folks. I am not hysterical about this, but I'm not too comfortable either.

Holby, I'm sorry to be a spoilsport. You sounded so pleased at sharing this new gadget with us, I really hated to find fault with it.

That's somewhat unnerving actually.

It's actually quite easy to figure whose IP might be whose based on nationality, coupled with who's online. And maybe I didn't want all you lot to know I work for the Government.

Strange, I couldn't see the link yesterday - am on a different computer now and can see it.

I agree with most people here - maybe not dangerous to have your IP address revealed, but there are few enough posters from, for example, Finland, Italy or the University of Wisconsin, one might just know or guess whose they are, and it's really none of my business to see which threads they've visited.
*wonders whether ToE threads would be shown, too*

And, yes, annoying pop-ups along with it.

(Pleased to see, though, that a majority is still using win98! :D )

Unstickied to reduce forum clutter.
The issue is moot anyway. We have no control over phpbb posting a link on the top of the pages.
