K, so another one of those things has come up that's given me an idea for discussion.

When we've got people as admins who aren't as techno adept as may be needed for an emergency, perhaps we should have techno geeks who are willing to be "on call" so to speak.

Just a bunch of people who have a pretty good idea of how (websites, programing, these boards) work, former admins, etc etc

Anyone whose willing could put their name and time zone down, and if there is ever a big emergency, the current voted on admins could make one or two of those people "emergency admins" for a few hours.

Whatcha all think? :)

It may be a good idea to start a sort of training program, so that when the time comes, people will be ready to admin.
I have no real tech knowledge, but I have been messing with computers for 20 odd years. I have run and designed a website. I generally can figure things out if given the proper documentation.
If everyone knows the basics, and is trained, we can cover ourselves in case of emergency. The real techies can handle the tough stuff.

I think we should just volunteer Holby and Squiddy ;)

As I said in the other thread, I don't mind volunteering as an 'emergency' fall back. But I'm very far from being a techno geek

I'd love to see an ongoing training program. Believe me, I NEED IT!

(Meanwhile I volunteer Holby and Squid)

Mind that Squid has one board of her own to manage and TORC to mod as well, so she might rarely be available. Though she's a very good choice.

I'll see if the bookstore has anything on phpbb when I go there tomorrow.

What?

*hides*

Ro is right I am getting a bit pressed for time.

Lately I have even done that thing where you do stuff and get paid.

I am in NYC time (EST) and my contact info is all here. If I am home my compy is running and IM up. Holla if you need me.

Oh and training is a good idea. I can help but I don't know how things work here specifically. However I could help write a FAQ with someone who has been an Admin or someting.

I'm available ... I'm a current Admin but I'll be available even when I'm not one anymore. My timezone is GMT + 2 so I'm just ahead of the bulk of our users sitting around in Europe ;)

That's right, Griff - you work in IT, too, don't you. And so does Ethel now that I think of it.

Well, we do have some experts here ... but I think the point is well taken that all of us should learn the basics so that we can admin effectively when the axe falls, er, I mean, when it's our turn. :Q

Admin isn't so hard to do ;) That's why we are rotating in new people, but I think I should rally the others so we can write a FAQ guide for adminning. There was a thing or two I had hassles with - writing down how to do it properly while I still remember the hassles will be a good idea, I agree!

Maybe I should note here that I know how to do the basics on this board (shifting/deleting threads/approving people etc). ;) So if an extra pair of hands is needed at any point I'm willing to help.

The actual admin job here is not a difficult one. Everything is quite simple to do, so you don't need to be a techie to be an admin really.

The only things that would require a techie would be:

1. protecting this board from the viruses that have been attacking php boards.
2. changing the look of this board
3. installing MODS

Aside from #1, those aren't imperative at the time, so there's no emergencies right now. I think things are being handled quite well so far with 3 active admins, though in the future, maybe we can have 5 just to ease the load.

As for a training program, I set up this board called b77experiment: http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/index.php? ... experiment
Anyone is welcome to register there and I can make you an admin so you can have a look at what the admin panel looks like. It can be used to mess around with the appearance and I guess it could evolve into a future admin training ground if necessary.

I'll make you an admin for b77experiment then, you'll probably be able to give us more than one clue.

:)

Squid, I haven't done anything yet because I just don't have the patience today to try and figure out how. Feel free to turn it upside down.
