My frustration with the level of outages with this messageboard host has about peaked. I don't think I can stand to even read this messageboard anymore when it takes me so many tries to load a page and just as many tries to post a reply. There's just too much of my life tied up in watching error message pages.

Surely there are more reliable hosts out there- Why don't we move?

Apathy.

And inertia.

I rarely have any problems at all; a few weeks ago all the boards went down on me, but other than that, I get no error pages, no problems replying.

*shrugs*

If others are having problems, though, I don't mind if the board moves.

You are lucky, then, Impy. It's doing better today, though. Maybe the management has fixed something?

My test tends to be whether or not HoF is also having issues. If they are both having issues, then I know the host people are messing around with something. And it usually does tend to be both at the same time.

It seems better today, yes.

I do not have the technical skill to move us to another server/host/whatever they're called. I support such a move. I'm willing to contribute to such a move. We just need someone or some people to make it happen.

We would need *E*'s support and approval, since she owns the domain name & account.

Personally, I'm hoping HoF will move. Then we'll have all the Tolkien sites on different servers and there should always be one up and running.

I just don't have the heart to start trying to organise this place to move, cause there's nobody in charge, hence, too many people to poll. Its like herding cats getting anything done here. :(

What we need, obviously, is a tin of tuna, as opposed to :spam: .

I agree it's frustrating when the two boards are down. Then again, how often is there something I need to post right then? Anything that actually approaches importance (usually needing to get hold of someone) I can do via other means, usually quicker.

I can only speak for myself, though, and I've never been a ranger. The level of annoyance can only be higher for them.

Quite often, actually. :D

You must have a higher degree of self-control than I do. :blackeye:

I was involved in the last move (as was Alatar, iirc), and my recollection is that it wasn’t nearly as painful or angst ridden as people thought it would be. We just did it, no polls, no hand wringing, just did it. I don’t see why we couldn’t do the same now.

True, but that time everything was handled by Civ0 cause we were going from their free offering to their commercial one.

It was fairly painless. The same will not be true of moving to a different host. We'll have to fully back up the site, move it to the new host and get everything working ourselves, and in the interim posts will be lost, features considered "standard" will turn out to have been Civ0 installed mods and some bits will probably get broken.

I just don't know if its worth it for the few posters we have left here.

What's the state of the HoF move?

True. I hadn’t really considered the technicalities of moving to a completely different host. That may very well make the whole effort not worthwhile. My point, however, was simply that there was no angst among the membership of the board. In fact, we didn’t really even ask if the members were ok with it. We just did it.

It’s not an issue for me. Other than loading slowly at times, I don’t have too many problems. One thing I did notice though. The Manwe thread in the Turf is now over 10,000 posts, with over 175,000 views. Could it be that that thread is slowing things down here?

Interesting question. You could announce a trial lock for a day or two and test the hypothesis.

Or somebody could start a new thread. I think we're on the third or fourth Manwe thread anyway, so starting a new one shouldn't be a big deal. :)

Actually, I suggested that a while ago, and was overruled.

If we think it might be affecting the board, then let's just start a new thread.

Actually, I don't think that will fix the problem - I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the incompetence of our hosts.

I know, but it was worth a try.
