Just as well.

Idk when the new guys came in but they were on the ball last year. Everyone knock on wood before we jinx it! ;)

It's $155 USD per year. Last year's invoice was dated 11 August 2007, but we haven't received this year's invoice yet. Perhaps they're just as lackadaisical about sending out invoices as they are to respond to support tickets?
The invoice has failed to post.

When it finally does post, it will be double or triple posted.

Well, I was just setting up an account with mxhub, and I notice that the Terms of Service include "MP3 files (including links to/from) are strictly not permitted on our servers".

Should I be concerned about this? I know we have links to .mp3's here and there.

Here are the Terms of Service

I guess I'll hold off for now, and ask them for clarification in the meantime...

Thoughts?

Um, I don't know. Are the mp3 links something we could do in PMs instead of in threads? Do we really do a lot of this?

Do they have a gallery feature where we would be free to post them?

I think they are just trying to save their asses from being prosecuted for piracy. As far as I remember, any links to music we have are to Real Player or Quick Time files of some sort (I think) and can't be downloaded from the site. I mean, there are different types of music files--they aren't all in mp3 format, and I think that the ones we have shared here have not been mp3s. I could be completely wrong though. But I bet that if you looked, you'd find something similar in the Terms of Service for most website hosts.

It seems that you're right; they wrote back and said as long as there's no copyright infringement, there's no problem.

Anyway, I just opened an account with them. I'm waiting for the welcome email which should have instructions to set up our hosting. Once I've gotten that, I'll set up a trial board with the backup I made last week. When that's done, I'll post the address so you can all have a look at it.

If that goes smoothly, I'll take a new backup and transfer it over. Details of what's going on and when will be posted in this thread.

To be continued... :spider:

Thanks so much for all your hard work on this, Jude! :) It might be a one-person job, but let me know if there's anything I can help out with.

Just a sort-update...

I've installed phpbb at our new host. I had hoped that we would be able to test it before we moved our domain name, but since we're on a shared IP, it doesn't look like we can; we have to access it through the domain name.

I've come up against a snag moving our database, but I'm working on it...

I'm in the process of transferring the files and data, and right after that will look at transferring the domain.

It could take anywhere from 24 hours to 5 business days for the domain to propagate through the internet. During this time, you might want to save all your posts onto your hard drive, and then check afterwards to see if they survived the move. Because as the domain propagates, some people browsing to board77.net could be looking at the old server, and others could be looking at the new server.

I'll post announcements as I do each step:

1. Final backup of data
2. Uploading backup to new server
3. Initiate the domain transfer

It may be that when the new domain takes hold, we could end up with a non-functional board, because I don't seem to be able to test it until the domain points to it. I've sent a message to mxhub to see if there is any way to test in advance, but I suspect the answer is no.

If that happens, I'll try to fix things, and if I'm not able to do so speedily, we can always point the domain back to noeClue while we figure out our next step. At worst, we'll suffer a few days of downtime (which is no worse than what we've been experiencing with noeClue anyway). At best, the new board will be functional from the get-go, and we'll lose a few posts (apart from those of you that were paying attention and repost their messages :poke: ).

If you log on one day and get an error page instead of the regular board, here's where you can check for updates:

Thread on TOB: "B77 or Hall of Fire or TORC down?"

We have a special thread on TOB where we can discuss technical problems while the other boards are down. I suggest you bookmark this link now, because if Board77 isn't working you won't be able to come here to find "that link that Jude posted". :D

Wish me luck - here's to a smooth transition!

Update: I've moved the Private Message data to the new server.

This means that if the move is successful, any PM's you send between now and when the new domain takes effect will be lost to posterity.

If the move is unsuccessful, those PM's will still be right there when we get back. :D

I hope you treat yourself to something really great after all of this work. Maybe some of that South African liquor?

So, it may turn out that our options are these:

1. Stay with NoeClue forever; put up with periodic board outages, and risk losing all data if the hard drive fails.

2. Change our domain name.

3. Initiate legal action to recover our own domain name.

Thoughts?

Yes, they are.

Should we take a vote?

What domain did Lidless register under years ago? Is that one still available?
