Our version of phpbb is 3 versions out of date, so I'll be attempting to upgrade us later today. You probably won't see a huge difference when it's done - not like when we moved from phpbb2 to phpbb3. But, as the bots have finally breached our outer wall, I'm hoping the latest version has enhanced security to defeat them. I guess we'll find out...

I'm backing up our database at this moment, so if you make any posts that you don't want lost between now and when the backup is complete, you might want to save them to your local computer.

Also, based on our last experience, you might want to download and save your avatars. Just in case

During the actual backup, the board will be unavailable. I'm hoping it will only be for a few minutes, but I don't know. You can check for updates at that TOB thread that you've all bookmarked.

Wish me luck!

Soo... if you notice anything that doesn't work properly, this would be a good thread to report it.

Avatars seem to be present...

No error messages spotted in the little bit of browsing I've done so far...

I see there's a "View Unread Posts" link as well as a "View New Posts" one.

Anybody notice anything different about the new version?

I wish the order of "view unanswered posts" and "view new posts" was reversed. I automatically click on "view new posts" and three times now I've mistakenly clicked on "view unanswered posts". Otherwise, it's the same AFAICT.

You mean you wish the two links on the left were switched with the three links on the right?

Oops. I meant "unread posts", not "unanswered posts".

I like the option of "unread posts." Sometimes I don't have time to read all the "new" ones and then they disappear from that link, so it's an improvement, to me. It drives me crazy that the similar link on HoF is so terrible.

Only change I've noticed so far. :)

I agree - the "View Unread Posts" button is like an improved version of the "View New Posts". In fact, I would almost say the "View New Posts" button is now obsolete and is only there for backward compatibility.

I'm unstickying this now - it looks like I didn't introduce any new bugs this time

I don't agree. I check B77 pretty often and there are dozens of posts I'm never going to read in the "unread posts" list, but I do want to see what new posts there are. I see what forums they're in and either read or ignore them. If I ignore them (which I do for any I'm not interested in) they go into the "unread posts" queue. I don't bother checking that list, since I've read all the posts I want to read.

And, hey, I just noticed that when you click on View More Smilies, they now come up in a two-part window. IOW, I don't see all of our smilies in one window, but I have to click on page 2 to see them all. (Oh, I'm not saying this well, but maybe you get the idea?)

I had a quick look at the Admin panel and couldn't find a way to change this, short of editing the template directly.

I'd like to hold off on that unless it becomes a real problem - editing the template is a serious business, and if done improperly could cause other errors.

I guess the smilies are divided into pages because the developers decided it would be more convenient for users - the advantage would be that you could add even more smilies and the window wouldn't expand to an unreasonable size; it would just add more pages. The disadvantage is that if the smiley is on page 7, say, you'd have to click through 7 pages to get the code for it.

I'd suggest we leave it for a month or so, and then, if it really bothers people, we can change it. Don't worry, I've edited the template before, and can probably do it again without breaking something.

On the other hand, the question to consider is: since the smiley window won't expand too much, should we take advantage of this and add more smileys?

I thought we tried, and failed, to add more smileys? We had a whole bunch picked out to add.

Did we? What went wrong? I can't remember.

Maybe it's easier with this new version?

Definitely don't make more work for yourself by trying to edit the template. It's odd that they changed it, but  I have most of the codes memorized anyway, but it's the smilies I don't use as often that I look up.

I don't remember why we couldn't add more smilies, but I always vote for more smilies!

Well, let's give it a try - somebody find me one or two smilies they want added, and I'll see if it's possible...
