Why? Is that somewhere in the charterlette? :suspicious:

No but we've never been open to people under 13 (I think there's a legal reason for that) and when we changed hosts we were still under the old Charter.

One of the new by-laws would be the 13 and up age limit but the committee is sort of stalled right now.

Well jeez, that sucks for younger people. Not that they'd necessarily have much reason to join, but what the hell? The internet's the internet. It shouldn't matter. >.>

I'm not sure what the regs are, but some people in high places think it does matter. But do you really want a bunch of 11 year-olds running around here? I remember the sixth grade all too well... :LMAO:

Probably an oversight, but also because we make them confirm it in another way? I never did anything with new members, so I don't recall the procedure.

As I remember the uncomfortable discussions; the point made was that some careers would be in jeopardy if it could be shown that they used a site where under age youngsters had access to adult sexually themed talk.
Now this seems appalling to me but it ain't my job on the line. TORC was pretty strictly modded with this fact in mind.

TORC, at least a few years ago, didn't have an age restriction. Young users were, however, not permitted to mention anything which might give their age away.

I thought the discussion about sexual themes and jobs on the line was the whole reason that the TOE age was raised to eighteen regardless of age of consent?

Well, I won't touch that button with a ten-foot cursor. I doubt that it would have any effect at all on the bots, as they're no doubt programmed to check for this.

If it's worth pursuing, someone can start a discussion thread for it.

Pips, I'm pretty sure TORC did have a 13 year old minimum age; they definitely had the policy in place where minors could not reveal their age.

As I recall, this is a legal issue. Facebook and MySpace both have minimum age requirements of 13.

The board is indeed meant to be closed to those thirteen and under. It’s not that the TOE is 18-over and the rest of the board is not. The fact is we do not mod for adult content anywhere (unlike TORC), and the TOE is merely meant to be a safe place for people to discuss adult subjects. But Tosh is right - some of our members would not be able to visit the site at all if it were open to under-13 members.

The 13 year age limit is related to the US COPPA law, btw.

The board is supposed to be set up so that when a new member tries to register they are first asked a question about their age. If the say they are under 13 they are supposed to get a polite letter telling them to bugger off. Otherwise they are allowed to register. The current setup does not ask the age question, so that does need to be fixed. I seem to recall that on the old board we were able to specify the text that was in the email the kiddies got. Don’t know if that is still possible with the new software.

One of our lines of defense against bots was the member-activation process. By being member-activated the registrant would receive an email at the address they registered with and would have to click on the link in the email to activate themselves. By checking to see if a new member was activated or not was one we could tell if they were legitimate or not. It was not a perfect system since some legit registrants would wait days to activate themselves, but if all of the warning signs were there (bogus name, i.e.:freeporn, bogus email address, no activation) you could easily tell who was real and who was not.

By the way, I strongly object to the baleetion of freeporn. This board has no freeporn. This board needs freeporn.

Did you know that hotmail won’t let you create an email address that uses certain words? Neither did I.

Okay, so in order for us to exist, we have to be closed to the under 13 crowd. Good to know.

Yes this is a common criteria for internet sites. There are cases where you can join if you are under 13, but you operate under different guidelines and there is no way we could do that here. And I think you need parents permission which means something like a credit card or whatever.

So yeah 13 and older.

But the COPPA law applies to commercial enterprises.

Rangers, if you want to flip the switch to limit the board to 13-and-over but can't find where to do it, let me know.

I did. When I first joined TORC, I tried to set up a hotmail account with Alassante_Estel but it wouldn't let me cause the word "ass" was "hidden" in the name  That's when I switched to using yahoo.... plus, yahoo gave me more memory.

I wanted to talk about the song 'Ashita Moshi Kimi ga Kowaretemo' on TORC, but you can't post anything containing 'shit'.

Also last week I got an official warning on Neopets for calling Firefox 'gay'. :P

I deleted a whole bunch yesterday, and there's four more today. I'm submitting the following ticket:
Quote:
In the last couple of weeks, we've had issues with spambots registering at our site.

I did some research and came across this mod:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 9&t=874805" target="_blank

Should we install this, do you think? Or do you know of any better mods to defeat the spambots?
