I disagree that sf should have to allow access to his private messages. Yes, the burden of proof is on sf, but solictr has not chosen to deny that he sent that message.

If he does so deny, then yes, we would need to establish proof. But since he has not done so, I can only assume that either:

1. He did send that message, and sees nothing wrong with it. Grounds for a permanent ban.

2. He's not overly concerned with being banned from here. Not in itself grounds for a ban, but since he doesn't care, why should anyone else?

By the way - rangers, you are checking the administrator email, right? Just in case he's unable to post in the Bike Racks, for whatever reason.

Sorry Di, my mistake. Your post is fine, I just can't read. That's what I get for posting from work while all hell is breaking loose here (at work, that is).

On second thought, if sf didn't want to allow Ranger's access to his account, he could take screenshots of the offending PMs. That'd be easy and solid proof.

I've seen the series of pm's. I think banning is appropriate and would have done so myself except that I wanted to be sure the other Rangers saw everything. sf sent me the offensive pm, I asked him for the entire exchange and he provided it. I then forwarded it all to the rest of the Rangers.

While it is the threat that troubles sf, I confess that what troubles me more is the insulting and demeaning tone of the posts. We are supposed to be civil here, we are expected to observe the common decencies of social conversation both in private and public. If that isn't the standard, then I want no part of the place.

Nope. :P Anyone that knows html could fake it. In fact, I could easily mock up a screenshot of a PM from you telling me that you totally sw000000n for Michael Jackson. And that the Simpsons have been getting steadily better ever since their lousy first six seasons. =:)

Oh, and I agree with vison's post above. If solicitr hasn't denied making the PM within a reasonable time, he should be banned permanently.

I presume that someone has actually contacted solicitr (by email, since his PM rights have been suspended) and informed him of the ban and asked him if he really sent the PMs in questions, and if so why. I don't mean to offend anyone by asking this; it seems almost too obvious. But unless I missed it, there hasn't been any actually mention in this thread of anyone doing that.

When I limited Solicitr to the Bike Racks, I also "froze" his PM account - he cannot erase any messages he as sent or received in the past. Tinwë is right - a ranger could, theoretically, change his password, then sign on as him, and look through all his PM. I don't know the legality of this, and I'd rather not be the ranger who does it. If anything screams of abuse of power, this is it. But it is possible to do it.

And V, I have not sent Solicitr an email - good idea. Could another ranger do so? I'm in the middle of moving in all my household goods and can only pop in here briefly for the next few days.

One month is plenty, I think.

I don't want to email solictr from my personal email address. However, I assumed that he had been notifed of the ban. This is not the case? I am not second-guessing laureanna here, I agree with what she did. One of the reasons I didn't ban him myself was that I wasn't perfectly familiar with the protocols and didn't have the time to find out.

Anyone who has access to the Admin email can email him from that.

I am not comfortable with the idea of permanently banning anyone at this stage of the game.

I am not disagreeing with the temporary ban (ETA: if this whole thing is proven to be true). I do think solicitr needs to be directly notified, just to cover all of the bases.

This place was designed to not have permabans.

There was always a place for permanent bans on extreme behavior such as spamming porn or any criminal behavior. I think threatening another poster with physical harm, even if only an empty threat, easily falls into that category.
