I think we started to deal with this, and I'm not sure what stage we're at.

We have 55 members on our membership list that have never posted, some having joined as early as 2005. Some were moved to a special "tempnopost" group, as can be seen by their yellow colour.

Was this in preparation for deleting them? There are some emails in the Admin email account that seem to be asking people if they still want to be active on b77.

Is this a work in progress that got interrupted?

I dunno Jude, but I'd be inclined to say delete them. They can always rejoin if they want.

I'd delete them too. Nobody's going to argue with that. :)

I think we should delete them.

Do you want to do it now or should I? I would probably take a lot longer since I'd have to figure out how. But I don't want you having to do all the work yourself.

I think he's bored. :) I'd agree with deleting them. If they have never posted, then they can re-register if need be.

I don't have time to get bored :P

Elsha, if you'd like to, that would be great! Hopefully the function in the Admin Panel isn't too hard to decipher. If it is, let me know and I'll go have a look.

Okay, this is easy enough for even me to do. :) I'm about halfway through the list, but I have to leave now for Thanksgiving dinner!

I've been keeping any poster whose "last active" date is within the last year. This has only been a handful so far. I've also been recording the username and email address of any deleted poster in case we decide we need to contact them for whatever reason.

I moved the remaining no-posters into the tempnopost group. When testing out the permissions, I found that this group doesn't have access to the Forum Management, Bike Racks, or Thinking of England forums, but does have access to the Members' Lounge. Is it supposed to be like that?

My gut reaction says that those posters should not have access to Member's Lounge. Is that a group permission we should change? Otherwise, I'll be deleting all of the old posters so I guess in their case it won't make a difference.

That's something I was working on during my last watch. I sent them all a notice. Didn't finish the job because ... well I don't know why. Guess I just forgot about it after I put them all in tempnopost. I'd say dump them all if they are still non-posters. :P They've had 7 month's notice. There were two who said "keep me on as a lurker" but I don't remember who they are. I may have put them in "validnopost". You will have to look in the B77 email around last March to determine who they are. Here's the thread in which this was discussed:

Well, I can't figure it out. When I tested their permissions, I couldn't access Forum Management but I could access The Member's Lounge. I can't find anything in the Admin Panel to restrict that. In fact, it looks like access to the Member's Lounge is restricted, but that's not the case (unless the "test permissions" feature is faulty).

Rangers - :help:

Okay, I went to Users and Groups and then to Groups' Forum Permissions. I said that the tempnopost group did not have access to the Members' Lounge. Now how do I test that? Is there a name of someone you've been using as a guinea pig?

(I'll probably figure this out before you post, but anyway...)

ETA: Yep, I see what you mean. I am testing out Caterpillar of death's permissions, and he/she has access to the Members' Lounge even though he/she is a part of the tempnopost group.

EETA: Okay, Caterpillar of death is also a member of the Registered Users group, as I suspect everyone left in the tempnopost group is. We'd have to do a fake registration to see what permissions someone had solely as a tempnopost member.

Maybe use one of the test members, like aagragaah or detail_oriented?

Sure. We could move one of those over to the tempnopost group and remove them from all other groups.

That totally works. detail_oriented, as a member of only the tempnopost group, can't even see the Members' Lounge, Forum Management (except for Thread of Historical Interest), ToE, etc.

Cool! So is the next step to remove all they tempnopost groups from all other groups?

Wait - :Q will this prevent them from being able to make their first post? I just thought of that while typing this.

Um, well, I made that last post under detail_oriented's permissions, so I don't think so.

So I deleted a few more - the only ones that are left are those who revisited the site after registering, and last visited less than a year ago.

There are also a number of one-post members whom I'm pretty sure will never return. We have the option to delete the user but retain the post (the username remains beside the post, but it becomes plain text rather than a hyperlink to the user's profile).

We can revisit this next year. If the no-post people haven't posted by then or revisited the site, they can probably be safely deleted.
