I was trying to log in but it said I had exceeded my allowed number of attempts - even though it was my first try. I did what it told mr to, solving the little puzzle but it was irritating.

You know, it did that to me the other day. I thought it was strange, too.

It happened to me too - let's keep an eye on this. It may have been a temporary glitch, or it may be a bug with the new upgrade.

It did that with me the first day after the upgrade. Hasn't done it since.

It just happened to me. Seems like some sort of security upgrade. Weird acting though.

The next time it happens to anyone, could they copy and paste the exact error message here?

Thanks!

Well, it appears that it's due to a spambot trying to log in under your account. It's probably searching the membership list and then extracting names from it, and then trying to log in with random letter combinations (the so-called "brute force attack").

All I can suggest is make sure that your password is unguessable. If it's a word, consider adding some numbers and punctuation marks to it. It won't prevent the problem described in this thread, but it makes it less likely that the spambot will succeed in logging into your account, and then posting all sorts of junk under your name.

You can read more about it here: Security Announcement - Login attempts exceeded

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, And knew that somehow I could find my way back; Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too - So I stayed in the darkness with you

Well that spambot has tried to use my name twice, in the event, if they actually succeed it was nice knowing you all :horse:

:( It did it to me again the other night, too. Maybe I'll upgrade my password just for fun.

Oh, is that what that was. I got locked out for a bit last week too and was pretty confused by it.

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

Does it still try to log in if you're already logged in? Or it's more of an issue for people who sign in each visit?

I hate when my e-mail account says I'm already logged in on another computer. :uhoh: It's a total, "the call is coming from inside the house" moment lol.

You can have your account set so that you automatically are logged in from more than one computer. Technically you aren't exactly logged in for real until you actually visit the site, but you can have more than one computer set to log you in automatically.

The real question is, what happens if two people simultaneously visit the site from two computers set to log in automatically? Not having examined that part of the code, I don't know. If anybody has access to two computers at once (say, a laptop and a desktop) could you try it and let us know what happens?

This is a new generation of bots, that actually examines the membership list, and tries to log in as each of the names on the list. This is a step beyond trying to automatically register under its own randomly-generated username. So those of you that are still using a memorable word as your password, please consider adding some numbers and punctuation to it.

And if you belong to more than one site and use the same password everywhere, please consider using different ones for each. I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone logs in one day and discovers that all sorts of junk has been posted in their name.

No, I only have it ~automatically log in~ from the one computer. Any more, and it's just asking for situations like this.

Mine is set to automatically log in on both of my computers. I'll try being "active" on both at the same time later and let you know.

Just every now and then (like after an update or something), I have to actually log in. That's the only time I've noticed that weird screen come up, and it's only happened twice. In any case, I added some numbers/punctuation to my password. I'll probably do the same on the other sites.

This is the first time I've logged in from this computer, and I got that message again. I'm pretty sure that means that some bot is continuously going through our membership list and attempting to log in as each of us.

You've all got difficult passwords, right?

No. :( I'd better update it again. I hate having to do that because I can't ever remember them when I change them.

Here's a neat trick for making passwords more difficult to guess.

Pick something you know you will remember, say "Lalaith"

Substitute your vowels as follows: a=@; i=1; o=0; e=3 (Backwards E sorta)

Then you get "L@l@1th". Easy to remember, hard to guess.

When I signed up for website hosting for my husband's judo club, the site kept prompting me for a stronger password. When I clicked the "tips for a stronger password" link, it wanted a combination of at least 8 letters, numbers, symbols and capital letters! It took me forever to come up with something that fit their criteria that I could remember!
