The Symposium II - serious but personal, experiences, diaries, etc - subforum
Thinking of England - subforum

The Library - Master Forum

To anyone who thinks we need an info forum, can I ask why? We only have three info threads:
  • The current admins & special permissions users
    A Comprehensive Guide to board77 - WIP
    How to post pictures
Why would we need a whole separate forum for so few threads when they can easily be stickied on the top of the welcome forum?

Pertaining to the admin requests forum, would there be anything wrong with a thread that the admins need to check frequently? To me this way would allow for less clutter and take up less space while accomplishing the same goal.

Does the Symposium II seem like a Turf II to anyone else?

I think it's for the constitution as well, plus a thread about rules relating to ToE, once we get those figured out, plus the current info threads, etc etc.

I don't really see the need for it either, to be honest. Threads about those topics could be stickied at the top of the Admin Request forum, as well as the Welcome forum.

In my personal view, a forum for this would be a good thing, because there are enough people who might think that they're topic would need a new thread. Plus we could put the "Ranks" thread there. Just generally makes it easier for people to contact admins quickly, without having to leave the board and send an email. I also think it would make it easier for admins - I, for instance, hate having to check the admin email, then come back to the board to take care of the request, then go back to the email to see the next request, etc etc etc. Just seems easier to have requests on the board, easily accessed by all admins and all posters.

Perhaps, but the Turf is too big as it is. I have heard a lot of comments - PM, on the phone and otherwise - that the forum is just too big, and it would be more convenient to split it, and the Symposium up. The symposium, for reasons relating to personal stories vs. philisophical discussions.

My impression of what I *think* the "Critics Corner" would be a forum for poetry/books/writings that members have written and are looking for comments/criticism. "There and Back Again" would be kept for RP and RP OOC threads.

The "Homebase" forum would be for homebase type threads - Aunties, the Orphanage, RWSG Coffee & Tea House, the Movies chat thread, the Manwe peoples chat thread and any other threads of that type. It's another effort get the Turf not so busy, and to keep these types of threads from sinking. I haven't yet made up my mind on whether or not I think that it's a good idea. Won't post my little version of the forums until I do.

Alatar - I really would rather not do that right away. The only reason I am doing it for the m77t forum, is that there are so many threads on it, and it's cluttering up the Turf. Otherwise, the m00t forum would be waiting until the general restructuring just like everything else. That, and there's been a general call for a m77t forum. Having not heard the same call for the hobbies and games forum, I'd rather wait for it to come down to a vote. Since the constitutional convention hasn't decided whether or not it's ok for admins to create new forums without a vote, I'm trying to do as little as possible in that regard. Don't want to deal with any accusations of abusing power, nor create a forum, and then have it decided that that forum isn't wanted and deal with the complications with that. My apologies, but I just don't feel that it's within my power at this time.

Rodia - the point is not to have that many forums. The point is to have as many options listed as possible, and to cut down from there. I've said that more times than I can count in this thread, in the admin forum, over PM, etc etc. I'm sorry if you dislike having so many options to choose from, but it was the best I could do. I'm also sorry if I sound pissy, but I'm seriously sick of explaining my motives over and over and over and over and over and over and over. I'm not trying to make the board like TORC, nor did I ever say that I wanted all of those options. I'm just trying to make as many idea's as possible so that everyone feels that they have a say, and then we can cut down from there. Sorry for sounding like a bitch  My frustration isn't with you, but with the situation in general.

Maybe I should just explain all of that in my sig :P

I'm beginning to think we should have a Tolkien subforum, in light of some of our recent cross-media posts. It would be nice to have all the discussions of the Book, the Movie, the Language, the Swoonees, the Games, the Fanfics, the Future Stuff, and the Music in one place, rather than having to sift thru all the subforums.

If we suddenly get a huge interest in, say, Douglas Adams Books/TV/Radio/Movie/Game comparisons, we could add a subforum for that. Star Wars might need a subforum, too (until about 2 days after the next premiere, anyway:P). We could call it the Subcreation Forum and have a subforum for each different fully developed "world". We might open subforums for Farscape, Star Trek, or Anime, or whatever would draw some interest.

It is a way to have our site grow, rather than remain entrenched. We could be one master site with a variety of fanatic subgroups, rather than be one of a host of small, struggling, specialty sites. Unlike many sites that are full of shallow swoon and chat threads, what has drawn us to this board, and previous message boards, is our desire to understand our own role as subcreators in RL, by looking at how Tolkien subcreated his Middle Earth (and how PJ, Shore, and others sub-subcreated it). No harm in looking into the way other subcreators made their worlds.

There is some (mostly favourable) discussion on this in Turf.

I, for one, think it an excellent idea.

Despite the fact that I have seen it stated (can't recall the posters 'though)
that B77 should not be encouraged to splinter off into groups, we already have a RP forum, TOE forum; for all intents and purposes Turf is Talk, the Symposium is Manwe, so why shouldn't there be a forum where we can discuss all thing Tolkien? The existing Movies forum can be Movies-other and the Books can be Books-other.

Whaddya say?

Pssst, Sass! It's "What say you?" You of all people should know that.

And I say aye.

Pips had the same idea somewhere else so it seems like this is one of those good concepts that float about and catch people...YES! Excellent idea, I love it.

laureanna,

Page 10, "How Busy Are We" thread.

There was a small discussion about this board's Mission Statement.
Wilko mentioned that we have no unifying theme and Voronwe said why not a Tolkien forum ... roundly seconded by myself and Prim.

That jogged my memory. I meant to respond to your post and, as usual, allowed myself to get sidetracked. So I came over here to bump your excellent suggestion and to get more imput.

I'd start a poll.

:D

But I think everyone is sick of polls by now.

:D :D :D

It's a great idea, laureanna!
I'd love to see it implemented.

You think everybody is sick of polls, Sass?

See, now, that's the kind of off-the-cuff assumption that's rampant around here. What we need is hard information.

I'll put up a poll on whether people are sick to death of polls. Or perhaps we should pre-poll first on whether people think such a poll would be appropriate. . . .

No, I think we need to go with focus groups, first. I'll see if we can get it in the constitution. :P

well, we do seem to go in circles a lot.

:help:

did. did seem to go in circles.

:help: :help:

it's better now that there is a committe

:help: :help: :help:

Hell, Prim. I love quizzes and lists and polls.
But then I'm an INTP.
Which has nothing to do with anything.
I just thought you might like to know.

So ... do we poll the pollsters on the efficacy of polling?

I'm sorry. Were you being serious?

:D
