New images of Titanic unveiled

The article only shows two of the new images - hopefully more will be available soon.

I have mixed feelings about this. I understand the historical value, but at the same time I wonder if we as a species don't often step over the "line", with good intentions, only to have things degrade to a point of disrespect.
At this point we know enough of the history of the event, so when does it cross the line?

Well, that's a fair question.

I don't think you could legitimately call this a "grave site" any more, since any bodies that were here have long since dissolved into the ecosystem. And there probably isn't a space on earth anywhere that someone hasn't died in, if you go back far enough.

The archivist in me wants to retrieve and preserve as much information as possible about this site.

Incidentally, here's an article with almost two minutes of underwater footage: BBC article

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

They're just photos, and nothing we haven't seen already. Exploring the interior of the ship is where it gets trickier, but more rewarding. I think one expedition knocked over the crows nest or something. But if anyone saw Ghosts of the Abyss, James Cameron's crew was able to get in the cargo hold and photograph that Renault, which I thought was pretty extraordinary. Wikipedia lists some of the known damages since its discovery, which, come on now idiots, watch where you're going.

In a barely related story, one of my favorite parts of the Royal Ontario Museum was a turtle shell that someone had accidentally dropped and broken, which allowed them to discover preserved eggs inside. It's the only example of this in the world. Not that we should go throwing around artifacts, I just loved how that particular situation was able to resolve itself. :P

Well, to be fair, operating that thingy is a little more complicated than walking through the park :P

Thanks for the tip, though - I just reserved Ghosts of the Abyss from my library :w00t:

Did I imply otherwise? ;) Whatever the job, do it well! Especially when dealing with irreplaceable icons!

Ghosts of the Abyss was an excellent, excellent movie. Wish I hadn't waited so long to see it (was a 2003 release, I think). One of the most poignant scenes occurs after a dive on September 11th, when they get to the surface and are told about the attacks. I always looked at the WTC as the Titanic for our time, so on a personal note, it was interesting to see such a... poetic situation. Being on the ship that never made it to New York, while New York experienced its own tragedy. I would've felt so torn between two worlds, I'd have gotten a nosebleed or something. Too many emotions and information to process!

Today is the 100th anniversary of when the Titanic struck the iceberg.

100 years. Hard to believe, isn't it? How the world has moved on.

And to think the Titanic was the latest and greatest of technology at the time.

Tomorrow at 2:20 in the morning is the 100th anniversary of when it finally sunk, killing 1576 people.

I suppose it worked out for the best that I didn't make any plans, since that whole week was spent in a daze over the loss of my dog, Jesse. Odd time of the year, now, April will seem to me. The first cousin on my dad's side of the family to have a baby was on the 5th, which was just two days before my mom's father passed away in 2005. My brother's birthday is the 6th, and Jesse died on the 10th.

I can't help but notice my last post here was just a month before my maternal grandmother died. Used my inheritance to visit New York City. Ground Zero was :scarey: and  I guess, and the only Titanic-related thing I saw was the memorial at South Street Seaport (there's another one in Central Park, I think).

Here's a neat painting by James A. Flood imagining if the Titanic had arrived at Chelsea Piers as intended...

That was, well, what do you say? Neat? That seems disrespectful. Same with "interesting."

It's unique. I've never seen anything like it.

Related: Today is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. This ship was accidentally rammed by a Norwegian coal ship, and sunk in just 14 minutes, killing 1012 people. It happened at 1:55 in the morning, when practically all the victims would have been asleep.

You can read a harrowing account by one of the survivors here.

This is scary news - a submersible carrying an unknown amount of people has been reported missing, after being overdue for a couple of hours yesterday.

CBC article
Quote:
A small submersible bringing tourists to the Titanic has gone missing 370 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland while diving to the legendary wreckage.

The company behind the mission — OceanGate Expeditions — says it is "exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely."

There is no confirmation on how many people are on board the submersible Titan, but it has a limit of five people.

"Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families," a statement from OceanGate reads.

The submersible was reported missing after it was overdue by a couple of hours on Sunday evening, according to Chief Mi'sel Joe — head of the Mi'kmaq band that owns the Polar Prince, the ship from which it had launched.

Joe said he's getting constant updates on the situation. He said another submersible is being flown in from the United States to join the search.

"Your mind wanders to what could have happened, but we just don't know," Joe said. "We just pray that everyone is OK."

Seems shady that they are sending submersibles down without apparently any backup plan in case of malfunction or accident.

The search continues into its third day, and the vessel has enough life support for five people for 96 hours. Time is running out.

I just heard a little bit about this story this morning and it sounds bonkers. I'm sure there must have been some valid reasons of some sort but it's shocking to me that in this day and age, vehicles like that don't have some sort of tracking device that would make them easy to find in case something goes wrong.
