It's not a concept of being 'worth' more, simply that laying down your life for some sort of cause was seen as being a man's role rather than a woman's. For example, men were expected to be ready to give their life for King and Country, women were not. Similiarly, a 'gentleman' would not save his life at the cost of letting a woman or child die. Courage and fortitude were seen as being 'masculine' virtues.

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

Which makes it even more lolarious that more first class men survived than third class women and children combined.

I don't know if this has anything to do with gender worthiness or old-fashioned values, but I just felt like saying it. When we were kids, I always hated that when we had to use the washroom at the mall or whatever, mom would bring my little brothers in with us (not the individual stalls heh). Then when I went golfing with my dad, him and my brother would make a right to the men's changeroom and leave me to figure out the lady's changeroom on my own. Oh okay, designated areas for women double as a family playground, and men are just men, I see.

If I ever have kids, I'm gonna try to explain my actions to them, even if it's stupid as shit lol. Not understanding anything sucks, tbh.

It was 98 years ago yesterday.

I was thinking - to commemorate the 100th anniversary, what about a m00t in Halifax two years from now?

I think it's a great idea. But a lot of other people will have the same idea.

Well then, have the moot in Cork, where Titanic made her last harbour! (Also conveniently close to me...)

I'd like to think that's possible! I really want to get to Ireland one day and maybe this could be the time.

I have never been to NB. I have been to every other province and territory, but not NB. OTOH, have you ever been to BC? :suspicious:

We were blessed to see ye waving at us on the way to PEI once, though. :D

No BC for me yet. :( I lived in Calgary on the cusp of being too young to remember it, but before the SF moot, I'd only been as far as Toronto. After SF... well, that was my last one. *emo tears* I'm out of practice now, but I can taste some trips in the near future. Even after the one in my sig.

This was what they did this year, so I imagine there will be something at least as big or bigger in 2012
Quote:
Event details: Titanic Commemoration at Pearse Square
Description

This ceremony will mark the 98th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. It is organised by Cobh Tourism and commences at 14.30hrs with a parade leaving from the Clock Tower Gallery on Lynch's Quay to the Titanic Memorial in Pearse Square in Cobh Town Centre. The ceremonies here include musical honours, prayers and the laying of wreaths. Further ceremonies then take place in the Promenade where the names of the 79 passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh are read and a wreath is placed in the sea by the Mayor of Cobh, in memory of all those passengers and crew who perished in the North Atlantic.

Well, I'd love to go to Ireland if others are interested. Is Cork close enough so that we could stay in those same cottages?

On the other hand, I don't want to miss out on Halifax either. What about Halifax 2011 for a 99-year anniversary?

Jude, Cork is about 2.5 hours by car from Bunratty, so we could always do the cottages and hire a bus for a day trip. Alternatively, we could make Cork our base and do a whole different set of activities! The Mithril Miniatures factory is near Cork as well.

Count me in! Cork is far more achievable for me than Halifax :thumbsup

:(

On a personal note, I would like to make mention of the loss of HMS Royal Oak, torpedoed at harbour in Scapa Flow, Orkney, October 13th, 1939 by a German u-boat, U-47, with the loss of 833 lives...one of whom was my grandfather. He left a widow and 18-month-old daughter.

Those are both sad stories.

It's amazing to me that the story of the Lancastria could have been so effectively suppressed, but I have to remember it was a pre-Information Age event. Still...
