For another super-cool animal, do a google image and a youtube search for "Dancing Sifaka".

They rock!!!

http://www.wave3.com/story/24352388/bil ... ion-debate

Bill Nye is going to debate Ken Ham (Answers in Genesis, founder of the Creation Museum).

This might actually tempt me to go to the Creation Museum finally. I'd like to see Bill Nye! (I've already seen Ken Ham. I even have his autograph in a King James Bible I got that includes points defending Creationism. I even contributed to the building of the Creation Museum way back when it was just an idea on paper.)

Who was I? What did you people do to me? :suspicious:

:Q You contributed to the Creation Museum? Looks like we saved you just in time!

You're welcome. :D

I did.

And you did.

:Wooper:

(To be clear, I still believe God is responsible for creating everything in this universe. I just think He likely used evolution as the means. Could He have done it in 6 days? Sure, but good science doesn't seem to support that.)

So I watched the whole debate. (If anyone saw any pins going onto my Pinterest boards during that time, just remember it was nearly 3 hours long!)

I think it was quite decent. I liked that neither man descended into name-calling or anything like that. I can't stand that in a debate. Do I think either one persuaded anyone to think differently? Probably not, but I suppose it's possible. It did reaffirm for me that I'm glad I left that belief system behind.

(I know this is probably a non-event for everyone else, but it's kind of a big deal around here and definitely among my friends and acquaintances.)

I did watch/listen to the whole thing. I know! :Q

Many of the people I know were rooting for Ken Ham. I saw a few rooting for Bill Nye. Mostly, I saw a lot of silence. People watched it, but then they didn't post up their thoughts other than to say that they had watched it. Most of those people I know are YEC, so I'm not sure what that meant. Perhaps they were persuaded a bit by Bill Nye and didn't want to admit it.

I wondered a bit how this would go. I know some people thought that debating creationists was a mistake - you're debating people with different rules about what constitutes evidence, in front of an audience that has little or no scientific background and can be taken in by something that simply sounds plausible.

Precisely.

And, undoubtedly, Nye was in front of a mostly hostile audience. (Not that I saw or heard any bad behavior, but it was held at the Creation Museum; ergo, the audience was mostly young earth creationists. A few times Nye made jokes that made me laugh but fell flat in the room.)

I didn't watch. I might later.

Phil Platt, the Bad Astronomer, wrote a follow up article in response to the questions that people in the audience held up for Bill Nye.

The snappiest one was:
Quote:
“If we came from monkeys then why are there still monkeys?”
Let me ask you this: If you came from parents, why are there still parents?
but for the most part they are respectful and informative. And he does expand on the answer above.

This thread makes me all nostalgic because vison made the first post on this page. *sigh*

That was a good article, Frelga.

As far as the monkeys, I wish he had said clearly that science doesn't say we came from the monkeys that exist today, but that we and monkeys are relatives, both descended from some long ago ancestor. I suppose his complete answer gets at that idea, but it seems to be one of the common misconceptions about evolution.
To me, that's one of the neat things about evolution - we are actually more or less distant relatives with every living creature.

And yikes, there are people who don't believe there could be sunsets without gods?! I suppose they don't believe flowers or vegetables can come true from seed either, without God individually having a hand in each one.
I suppose mutants happen when God is having an off day? ;)
