American Airlines cancels Boeing 737 Max flights through mid-August

I was only surprised to read this because I had thought that all the airlines had already done so. Is AA the last one?

Jude, they just extended the time. Originally, it was supposed to be just a quick software fix, done within a few weeks. Then, as more information came to light, airlines started grounding planes (on top of the temporary grounding by the U.S.) or canceling contracts. I think American had already grounded the planes for a few months before this announcement.

I think we need more of these classes:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... nformation
Quote:
Calling Bullshit: Data Reasoning in a Digital World, designed and co-taught by the University of Washington professors Jevin West and Carl Bergstrom, begins with a premise so obvious we barely lend it the attention it deserves: “Our world is saturated with bullshit.” And so, every week for 12 weeks, the professors expose “one specific facet of bullshit”, doing so in the explicit spirit of resistance. “This is,” they explain, “our attempt to fight back.”

The problem of bullshit transcends political bounds, the class teaches. The proliferation of bullshit, according to West and Bergstrom, is “not a matter of left- or rightwing ideology; both sides of the aisle have proven themselves facile at creating and spreading bullshit. Rather (and at the risk of grandiose language) adequate bullshit detection strikes us as essential to the survival of liberal democracy.”

Revenue Quebec number connects callers to 'hottest chat line in town'
Quote:
A toll-free help line number provided by Revenue Quebec actually connects callers to a chat line for singles.

Jean-François Dorais, of Gatineau, Que., said his partner's February, March and April alimony statements from the provincial agency listed the number.

"I called [the toll-free number] and the answer I got is, 'Welcome, you're at the hottest chat line in town,'" Dorais said.

Meanwhile in Russia.

Harness-wearing whale was 'trained by Russian military,' researchers say

To be fair, there's zero indication that the whale was trained by military or that it was Russian military, especially since the stamps on the harness were in English.

From what I heard, the researchers basically said "it isn't ours." All else is speculation, though not unlikely.

Well, the whale didn't comment, possibly because they didn't have a Russian interpreter on hand. But if Russians are involved, it could be anyone from GRU and Navy, to fishermen or a bunch of high schoolers in a kayak. In Russia, the whales research you. :D

I considered adding this caustic editorial to the Trump thread but it's probably better here:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... presidents
Quote:
There is an emerging political phenomenon that poses a unique threat to international stability and our collective sanity. It is the growing influence of what is sometimes known, in political jargon, as the Idiot Adult Son. From Donald Trump to Benjamin Netanyahu, Jair Bolsonaro to Rodrigo Duterte, the world’s most awful leaders all seem to have knuckleheaded offspring who are doing their best to be just like Dad, and doing a lot of damage in the process...

Yair Netanyahu, the eldest son of Israel’s prime minister, is also adept at being awful online. Last month he went on a racist rant on Twitter saying that “there is no such thing” as Palestine because the letter “P” does not appear in the Arabic alphabet. Yair, a man with the intellectual capacity of a half-dead moth, didn’t seem aware that Palestine is the Anglicised version of the Arabic word falasteen. He also didn’t seem to have considered, as various people pointed out, that there’s no “J” in Hebrew. Which, by his impeccable logic, would mean there’s no such thing as a Jewish person...

Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines, for example, has built a bloody brand around executing anyone who has anything to do with drugs. It has proved more than a little awkward, then, that his eldest son, Paolo, is constantly being linked to the drug trade...

Hey Inky, since you've posted before about air passenger rights, I think you'll be interested in this story:

Canada, really? Wow. Usually these stories come from the US. It makes me wonder if they're getting pressure from the US.

Here's a bizarre story:

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watc ... -of-school
Quote:
A school in California was forced to cancel plans for its annual fundraiser after conspiracy theorists flooded the school with emails warning of a potential terrorist attack they thought was predicted in a tweet from former FBI Director James Comey.

...The tweet in question was an innocuous Twitter meme in which Comey listed five former positions he has held...

Conspiracy theorists involved with the so-called QAnon movement deduced that Comey's five listed jobs began with letters that formed the acronym "GVCSF," which they asserted was a reference to the Grass Valley Charter School Foundation, which runs the school.

#FiveJobsIveHad 1. Grocery store clerk
2. Vocal soloist for church weddings
3. Chemist
4. Strike-replacement high school teacher
5. FBI Director, interrupted
— James Comey (@Comey) April 27, 2019

The supposed reference, they reportedly argued to school officials and police, indicated that Comey was planning a "terrorist attack" on the school.

This is really neither weird nor unusual. Just a reminder that Carter is still a contender for the most adorable former President.

Carter is a decent man. Not to mention pretty active for his age. :)

Quote:
Every 50 seconds, Habitat for Humanity International finishes a new house for someone in need. But the organization didn’t always have such a wide reach. When it celebrated its fifth anniversary in 1981, the Americus, Georgia-based nonprofit had built 342 houses. A few years later, President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, who lived just down the road in Plains, worked on a Habitat project and quickly decided they’d like to become more involved. That same year, in 1984, they launched Habitat’s Carter Work Project, a weeklong build that takes place annually at locations around the globe and has yielded 4,290 houses.

Carter, 93, took time out from this week’s build in Indiana—yes, he still picks up a hammer—to reflect on his three decades with the organization....

I do admire him greatly. I can barely remember when he was president. The general sentiment I had from that time was that he was not very well liked or good at being president or something, but I'm made up my mind otherwise.

Amazon is reportedly working on a wearable device that would be able to read human emotions, according to Bloomberg.

The wrist-worn technology, classified as a “health and wellness” product, is designed to work with a smartphone app, similar to Fitbit or Apple Watch, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg.

The gadget reportedly uses microphones paired with software to discern how the person wearing it is feeling based on the sound of their voice
