"Meowing to himself"? That wasn't mentioned in the article I read...

What we know about Alek Minassian, alleged driver in deadly Toronto van attack
Quote:
"I'm not sure if he had any very, very close friends, at least publicly," Bluff said. "I never saw him with a group of friends, generally. But whenever we would see him in the hallways, we'd always speak to him or say hi to him or whatnot."

Bluff said Minassian didn't seem to have a core group of friends and remembers him being mostly "sort of in the background" rather than at the centre of a social group.

"I remember seeing him probably just walking down the halls, usually by himself, or in the cafeteria by himself," he said. "My memory is not perfect, but certainly, it would not be, I don't think, a misstatement to say that he wasn't overly social.

It was in the BBC article I read (but didn't post here, until now):
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43875321
Quote:
Mr Minassian had previously attended a school for students with special needs in north Toronto, former classmates said.

He would be seen walking around Thornlea Secondary School with his head down and hands clasped tightly together making meowing noises, Shereen Chami told Reuters.

One of the linked articles mentioned that he made references to being angry because he couldn't get girls (with some odd terminology). How do we teach young men that the world doesn't owe them sex? :(

There was also another shooting in the US - a white guy with an AR-15 killed four people, three of them black and one Hispanic, before being stopped by an unarmed black man. That story is already off the front pages.

Al Qaeda doesn't seem to be the problem in terms of terror attacks in North America.

I heard about that, actually. And that proves that the claim that "the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" is utter bullshit.

Getting rid of pornography would be one step toward helping this attitude.

And I agree with you, Jude.

Best of luck with that. Would be easier to get rid of prostitution...

The biological drive to have sex is strong. That said, normal young men do learn that the world doesn't owe them sex, provided they grow up in a good environment with decent examples. They still want it, of course - they just learn socially acceptable ways to get it.
This young man wasn't normal and I don't think you can do a hell of a lot with someone like that.

The problem is, the idea that men are entitled to women's bodies is embedded pretty deeply (see the Echo chamber thread, and the way violent rape is casually compared to stealing a man's wallet). It is true that most men learn to live with disappointment, but while this person was probably not well, he picked up his fixations through listening to many allegedly healthy men.

Oh come on. I'd appreciate it if you'd not continue twisting my words on the subject months after I tried in vain to set you straight.

You weren't the first or the only man to put it that way. I would appreciate if men stopped thinking that way but here we are.

OK
Seriously, I didn't refer to any poster or post specifically. If you want to revisit any of your comments, we should probably take it to that thread. Here and now, I was talking in general about the sentiment that women owe men free sex in any form.

Which nobody here ever said anywhere. You seem to be projecting your own baggage onto others here.

I have no idea, but you seem to believe all men are rapists or at least rapist sympathisers.

You are correct - you have no idea.

Quite the opposite is true. The men in my life have been excellent examples of treating women with respect, both of their bodies and their intelligence. From my grandfathers to my coworkers, they demonstrate the difference between a good man and a "nice guy". That's one reason why I have high expectations of men and refuse to put up with their self-serving bullshit.

But since you brought up my baggage, you'll agree it's only fair to talk about yours. You have being complacent if not complicit in treating women's bodies as commodities as "just the way things are." Now you are hearing that the way things are sucks, that women have options other than putting up with it, and some of those options involve holding men responsible for their actions and words. A good man would examine whether he has contributed to the problem and whether he can do something to help. I have enough faith in you to believe that you can get to that point.

And I believe you have no idea of the content of my character, and convincing you of my worth or counteracting your absurd assumptions and strawmen is well down on my list of priorities, which is why I stopped engaging you on this. But if you insist on tossing smug little "moral high ground" grenades expect to be called on it.

I doubt that. Based on news reports, he was apparently part of a weird internet group that label themselves "the involuntarily celibate" and rage among themselves about it, blaming women for not appreciating their charms. In my experience, the last thing the average healthy male under 30 would announce publicly is that no woman wants to date him.

I don't really want to do that. Or rather, I really don't want to do that. But if you weren't referring specifically to my remarks there and just had some vague recollection that wallets were discussed, then ok.

You were the one who brought up my baggage. Next time you want to make it personal, back it up or leave it out.
