Pretty lengthy article from a former NASA scientist who claims he was silenced by his employers for political reasons. I am not a scientist but this fellow says that the polar icecaps are melting twice as fast as they did just five years ago. He uses photographic evidence to support his claim. He discusses the possible impact on the climate. This is worth reading.

The author is Jim Hansen. Jim Hansen, the director of the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, is President George Bush's top climate modeller.

Lots of red flags have been going off on that front lately. Here's a sampling:

Don't need no scientists. Go to the Arctic and talk to the natives. They are worried and scared, and who can blame them.

Hansen?

No, wasn't it Amundsen? :D

So what? There are three major ice caps, the north pole ice cap, the greenland ice cap and the antarctic ice cap.

From what I have read the Antarctic cap is not melting significantly faster.

The Greenland Ice cap is not large enough even if it completely melted to cause large changes in sea level, from what I have read.

The North Polar cap is resting on water, same as an ice cube in a drink (this is also partly the case with the Greenland ice) the water level in a drink does not rise as the ice cubes in it melt, so even if the entire polar ice cap melted there would be no major sea level increase.

I expect there would be an effect on climate though, but I imagine that the plants and animals would adapt to the changes.
