First take a look at this official NASA image of part of the moon:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/apoll ... S15-P-9625

Notice what appears to be a cigar-shaped object, circled in this smaller version:

http://www.neilslade.com/gifs/moonstrip.jpg

Now look at this supposed video of a flyover of the object:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc7mkHtuLOs

Here's a still:

This is either astonishing real footage, or the work of an incredible model maker and visual effects artist. Obviously I suspect the latter, but I'd love to know how it was produced.

yov - no, because the same person has posted still photos of the same object, from a wider perspective, and the landscape matches every detail in the NASA image. This took a lot of work.

See the stills here:

Good luck making a sandpit look like that!

And whatever you say about the hoax, the cigar-shaped feature (almost a mile long) sitting in a crater in the NASA image is real. Pretty strange.

sorry, that's not even remotely believable. Camera's in space don't shake around like that one is. Nor can they zoom in that close on a whim, or circle around like a helicopter.

I'm curious as to why someone would spend so much time trying to fake this kind of thing...

Personally I could not say with 100% certainty what low-tech instruments they may or may not have had back then, but I agree it's unlikely. I don't see any circling going on though.

It is actually quite astonishing how much it would take if you consider the whole video to be fake. Half of it is not even related to the cigar-rock and must contain literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of craters and other geographic features.

It's not all fake, I'm sure the beginning is real. It is moving in a line, at a somewhat slow pace, probably the highest definition the camera has.

There is circling around it, to get different angles... a satalite can only look at something from one direction, as it moves past it.

It's not so much the camera being low-tech, it's just a reality of spaceflight. You're always moving in a straight line.

Around 3 minutes in, the screen gets all white for a second, and suddenly the camera shakes all the time... it's not even a well done transition... The size and clarity of the subtitles changes as well. The scene looks totally different before and after as well.

any decent film student could make a better fake in about a day.

But when the vid gets to the "cigar"-thingie, it zooms in way close. You can't see the surrounding landscape much anymore at that point.

Oh I know people DO it... I'm just always curious as to WHY...

I dunno. I have a really good monitor and it's just a blur to me.

I vote for "hoax" though. Just like the moon landings.

I was referring to these stills from a different youtube vid, provided by the same guy:

Compare these to the NASA still:

I know, Iavas. Compare those stills with what you actually see in the video. You don't see much except the big shadowy rock it's on because he zooms into the "ship" so closely.

So is your point that the 3 stills are real?

No, my point is that the you can't compare the original video to the real photos because you hardly see any of the ship's surrounding landscape. I assumed those stills were real but I have no idea. Don't see why it would matter, though.

Iavas, you do realize how easy it is to photoshop stuff, don't you?

yov, it would matter because that would mean the supposed hoaxer really does have access to moon images better than NASA has ever released.

And if they are real, that means there's a pretty bizarre object sitting in that crater!

hal - geez, give some credit to the talent of the hoaxer! No way you or I could photoshop a fake lunar surface and make it look anywhere near that realistic.

you don't have to do the whole surface, just a tiny bit of it... change a shadow here, or a shadow there...

It's not hard.

Aside from the main rock feature, the rest of it doesn't really look that much like the NASA still.

Well I can tell you are both merely glancing over these images.

The number of geographic features that correspond is actually large and to get them to match is a BIG job. Not to even mention, where did the base images that are altered come from.

The stills are either real, or they are VERY skilled forgeries.

To sum up, hal thinks the 3 stills are photoshopped to look like the NASA image, and the video is a crude fake that could have been made in a day?

yov agrees that the video is a crude fake, but is open to the stills being real?
