Quote:
Hans Reiser is waiting for me, standing on the other side of an imitation-wood table. The room is small, the concrete walls bare. A guard locks the steel door from the outside. There is no sound. Reiser is wearing the red jumpsuit of a prisoner in solitary confinement, though he has been allowed to meet with me in this chilly visiting room. There was a time when he was known as a cantankerous but visionary open source programmer. His work was funded by the government; he was widely credited (and sometimes reviled) for rethinking the structure of the Linux operating system. Now he is known as prisoner BFP563.
Fascinating read.

Fascinating was an understatement. :Q

Thanks for posting this, Alatar. I haven't got time to read it all, just skimmed the opening bit, but will get back to it later.

Indeed. Don't know how else to respond. People like Reiser simultaneously make me feel inferior and (maybe) a little glad that I am.

No one seems to have clean hands in this mess. I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't Dan Brown's latest as I read the article.

Damn...

It looks like Rory is going to need some serious therapy for a long, long time...

This sounds a lot like the plot of the latest suspense-thriller. :Q

I expect there will be a book out of it at some point. And a movie.

Elsha's right--the poor kids. :(

One of the things that struck me was that he's clearly a very principled person. His principles aren't exactly conventional, but one of the the things that makes these people so fascinating is their willingness and ability to do things their own way instead of relying on convention. By the end of the article I found myself hoping he didn't actually do it, though the case against him seems pretty good.

If this were a novel or a movie, critics would be making snide comments about over the top characters and far-fetched plotlines. But this is reality, and you can't fling it back on a shelf.

Poor kids. I'd be afraid to come back to the US too if I were in their shoes.

Dave, I agree with you; I found myself really hoping he didn't do it. I wonder if there is something to the Russian mafia angle. Or if his weird friend might have done it and framed him for it.

Yeah, I agree. By the end of the article, I felt sorry for him and the children and hated the wife and crazy friend. I noticed that at one point, the court had ordered that the friend could not be around the children. There must have been a very good reason for that.

Incidentally, I'm skeptical about the claim that the children were afraid to come back to the U.S. My aunt and uncle wanted to adopt a Russian orphan a few years ago; they spent months filling out forms and jumping through hoops; even went over there to visit him (or vice versa; can't remember for sure). A few days before the thing was going to be final, someone called and told them the deal was off because the child didn't want to come to America. Probably just Russian officials being Russian officials.

That is entirely possible, however, what these children had to go through must have been unimaginably traumatic.
