Estel and I have disagreements on occasion - we're a man and a woman, duh? But one thing that is not based on the latter is the following:

If you could only keep one sense, what would it be? For me, it's sight. I'm a visual guy - I need to see my surroundings. Without it I would feel claustrophobic. There are subtitles, right. Plus I get to see beauty - even though I wouldn't be able to feel it, smell it, etc. I would value this above touch - without which I could never have an orgasm ever again.

Estel, even though slightly claustrophobic, could not bear to part with her sense of hearing - she has been in many choirs, has an incredible singing voice and adores Classical music (plus Nine Inch Nails - go figure).

So which one of the senses would you not want to let go of?

Humour? Jeez, Lidless. That's not fair.

I voted "sight". I would hate not to be able to read.

Oh, yeah. And beauty. Sure.

It's reading I'd miss.

Argh! I voted wrong! It's sight for me too, all the way. I voted smell. That's the one I actually use the least.

It a tough one. By process of elimination - I guess touch would be the easiest to give up, although I can’t imagine what it would be like to be totally numb. Hearing would be hard to loose because like Estel I love music, but I always find it pretty east to recreate music in my head (sometimes better than the original!), so I guess hearing could go. Sight would be even harder - being an architect I am a visually oriented person, but the truth is my eyesight is already horrible, and it ain’t gettin’ any better, and there is the possibility I might lose my sight someday anyway, so I guess I should resign myself to that possibility. That leaves taste and smell. They say that smell is one of the most powerful of the senses and the most strongly tied to memory. On the other hand, I’m a foody, I can’t imagine not being able to taste. Then again, isn’t much of taste tied to smell? I know I remember doing experiments back in school where we were blindfolded, given a bite of some food, but had something else held up to our nose and we always guessed the food we were eating was the one we smelled, not the one we ate. So, does taste even really count as a sense? It seems as though smell is what controls taste. So I’m going with smell.

Of course, if I were to loose all of my senses but one I’d just kill myself anyway. What a horrid life. ;)

I selected humor even if it isn't a real sense because with a sense of humor all things all else is possible :)

Otherwise it would be sight or hearing I can't choose.

Yeah, ol' Lidless was messing with our heads.

You can be blind, deaf, mute, and paralyzed, but I bet you could still have a sense of humour.

Not sure how we'd know though.

Sorry.

Poor taste.

I apologize.

That's what I get for hanging around Lidless.

The discussion Steve and I had was only between hearing and sight, so this poll isn't really fair :P

If it was only one of those senses, I would want touch - a touch can show all emotion a human has more than anything else. If I had to lose all of my other senses, I would need an occasional hug. You can speak/communicate through touch (Helen Keller), plus, an orgasm every once in a while would be a good thing. Add on top of all that, the ability to feel vibrations - I bet, after a while, one would be able to tell the difference between different type of vibrations - like when playing the piano - and would be able to "listen" to music by feeling the vibrations.

Touch is definitely the one I would keep if I had to choose between all of those.

I can't choose between sight and hearing.

Sight. Definitely.

Without sight, how would I be able to hang out on the internet? :blackeye:

There are screen readers for surfing the Internet, and books on tape/CD to substitute for reading. But it's tough to communicate with other people in person without hearing, so I'd probably want to keep the hearing at the expense of other senses.

I don't think, though that I could live without a sense of touch, even if I still had all my other senses. How would I swallow food? How would I know when my feet hit the floor at each step? How would I feel the gas pedal or the keyboard? How would I feel my way in the dark? This is a very real problem for people who are diabetic and lose both their sight and the feeling in their hands and feet.

No, I couldn't give up all the senses, and I'd have trouble giving up even one. I could probably live without taste and smell, but I won't go any farther than that. My sense of irony is what has gotten me this far in life. I definitely need to keep that one.

I chose hearing. Obviously, I don't want to lose any of my senses. But I figure I could learn to play by ear if I had to, and I don't think I could give up music. I'm already "blind" without glasses/contacts; at least it's correctable.

I choose Touch. I think I'd feel far too disconnected from the world without it. Not feeling hugs would be a great great loss.

Give me sight so I can see women. ...no wait! I wouldn't be able to FEEL women! Or smell them! Or taste them! Or humor th...wtf? Humor?

In such a case, I would join a monastery. But until then, it's all about the booty.

Sight. I cannot imagine being happy without being able to read - books and people.

I assume, as it's not mentioned in this poll, that one gets to keep a sixth sense anyway.

Touch, definitely. Without touch, you wouldn't feel injuries and would have rotting wounds everywhere. You wouldn't last long that way.

I can't decide. I would rather die than have to give up all but one sense. If the choice was just hearing and sight, I would give up my sight. I can listen to books on tape. I imagine there is voice activated stuff that I could use to surf the internet.

Edit: I dunno where my mind was....

I cannot answer this. I value all of my senses too much. I do agree that the taste/smell senses are directly connected, but I do not want to give up even that. And, having some nerve problems in the past, losing my sense of touch would be a definite "no." But I am not willing to give up vision or hearing either.

So, I am hopefully happy that I keep all of my senses. :D Yes, I know it is a cop out answer. And, without any other senses, how could one still have a sense of humor? I suppose one could, but how could they express it? Without expressing it and being able to get the feedback, would such a thing continue to exist? I do not really ever want to find out that answer.
