and learned to love reality TV shows.
Brought to you by FastCar at Maniacs.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/0 ... index.html
Get ready for reruns and
My Big Fat Top Beauty Attacks the Amazing Apprenticing Bacheling Brother, Who Crashes Real Weddings While Surviving Police Chases in an Extremely Made Over Hell's Kitchen on Temptation Island with Choppers and Standing Comics Racing Idols.

How you'll be affected

- Immediately: Late-night talk shows, which depend on topical material, will go to reruns
- In about one month: Daytime soap operas will go to reruns
- By January-February: Current prime-time shows will likely run out of fresh episodes
- Reality shows unaffected; DUH!
Fox, with fewer hours to program and powerhouse "American Idol" returning in January, in best shape if strike continues, according to The Hollywood Reporter
- ABC has stockpiled several new shows, could put them on in midseason if strike persists
- TV networks have stockpiled TV movies
- Movie studios in decent shape for now

Till this is all resolved,
Meet the new writing staff.....

we got a hundred of them in a room pounding away.

You all make jokes but I do watch a considerable amount of TV and it might sound silly but TV has kind of become family bonding time. When I lived at home we would all gather downstairs to watch shows and then discuss. And now that I've moved across the country TV is still a topic of discussion.

I think the strike is stupid because Hollywood makes too much money but don't knock TV watchers we are people too :D.

Not only that but I read books too ;)

You're only sleeping

I think I'd prefer to slowly slice up my own eyeballs with a blunt potato peeler.

You know, once you're strapped to the chair, and the two mean-looking assistants are holding your eyelids open, and the main perpetrator is brandishing the potato peeler, I bet those books are suddenly going to look very appealing. ;)

What demo said except in regards to reality tv. Ugh.

This is both really good and really bad timing for me, since I recently went a bit overboard in the tv-watching. I mean, for a while there my Wednesday nights looked like this: Pushing Daisies from 9 until 10 with Kid Nation reserved for commercial breaks, Criminal Minds from 10 to 11 with Gossip Girl during commercials, and then CSI New York from 11 until midnight with some other show I can't remember watching during commercials. I dunno what I would do if Lost was also on the air. But most shows I've seen have been on DVD (went through three dozen discs over the summer) so while it sucks to be missing out on shows I'm now a fan of, at least there is no lack of previous seasons to rent and check out. If not of the ones I'm familiar with, then at least others I missed the first time around.

That's my recommendation, anyway. Rent the tv shows. Don't wait around for commercials or once-a-week episodes with long summer waits. Go at your own pace and enjoy the gag reel at the end.

Not that it solves strike negotions, but it'll pass the time. :P

I watch the Discovery Channel, the History Channel and the Home and Garden channel, so this has no affect on me.:)

One word...TIVO :D

I don't watch much reality TV, Dirty Jobs with Mike OhmanIhavehugecrush Rowe is about the most reality like thing I watch.

I do watch Pushing Daisies and The Riches (but they are not on until March). My daughter being a typical 17 year watches Grey's.

I am like Lily, most of my TV watching is on the non-network stuff, plus a lot of BBC America which is all repeats anyway. ;)

Personally, I support the writers in this. They are the talent behind all the good shows and get practically nothing in the way of residuals. The Studios are screwing them royally.

I agree to a point. If the writer is good and is making a quality dialouge for a good show...they should be well paid and rewarded. However, there are too many shows on that are absolute crap and I have to wonder if those writers deserve anything but a kick to the curb.

I understand a union wanting to have it's people get paid for the work they do. But if the work is bad....why reward or pay for that? I guess its a double edged sword of sorts. I fully believe if a product is well made, produced it should recieve good compensation. However, if it's not well made and really is crap, why should I pay the same amount.

If one carpenter builds a solid mahogany door and another carpenter glues together card-board boxes and calls it a door, why should I pay the same price? And if both the carpenters belong to the same union how does one say to pay one and fire one.

Well, the simple rule is that if the show is crap, there will be no residuals. Writers get paid for their work now. What they don't get is residual pay for their work when its still making money for the studio.

Put simply, if the writers of Battlestar Galactica were crap, would anyone be buying the DVDs? Good shows generate lots of money on DVD. Shouldn't the people responsible for the quality of those shows share in the residuals?

Currently the writers of a show earn roughly 4c per DVD. Less than the people who make the plastic cases. Compare that with an author of a book who makes between 8% and 15% per book. Where's the difference?

Don't forget all that "new media" floating around. Nobody's getting paid for people downloading episodes online. Not that watching it on tv helps if you're not a Neilsen family.

Ara, I wouldn't even know where to get a tivo let alone how to program it. :P And it only records what the tv airs, yeah? So if something's not airing, you can't watch it? That would interfere with my Veronica Mars lovin'!

I agree with Alatar and *E*.

Even though I watch very little TV. Hm. Lately it's been "no TV". I am trying very hard to impose a "no TV" night on my family. I might just have to do it by force.
