What's a hero anyway? Indy Jones gets a free pass to shoot anyone who gets in his way, because conveniently, they're all Nazis. Orcs are bred to be killed by Aragorn and his followers. Max Payne is hunted for a crime he didn't commit, so he's forgiven for slaughtering a whole city of enemies.
I think a game like Dungeon Keeper is what we need more of- it makes kids think, hey, what about the OTHER side? What, exactly, makes me the good guy?
And this is stuff parents should talk about with their kids. You get nowhere saying 'this is all bad' and 'this is all good', because it never is. Not in a decent RPG, book, or movie.
I agree with everything jade said about sex in games. It's not that it's bad, it's that I doubt it will get the proper respect it deserves in a game. Sex is just too complex for a game.
You know what games I don't like? The ones based on WW2. I've played Call of Duty almost all the way through (the Russian campaign killed me) and enjoyed it immensely, then suddenly realised what a trivial approach it was making me take to a very important and painful time in my own country's history. Although the game was excellent, the problem was just that: it was a game. It was entertainment, it was meant to be fun. While playing it, I was able to completely forget what reality it was set in, and what atrocities it didn't show. I was able to forget that I was shooting Germans- they could have been aliens or goblins. That's not acceptable, for me. The subject was just not something that ought to be turned into mindless entertainment.
And yes, it sucks, because the game was really good. I sometimes want to play it again. But no matter how good, I don't think it gives the subject enough weight and respect. Pretty graphics and accurate weaponry are not enough.
