I should look here more often.

Don't despair, I love you all.
And I have plenty of hair, although it's not very golden.

Two years ago, I actually visited the CERN with a group of students from Berlin, but we could not go into the LEP, the former accelerator. Still, we got a demonstration of the power of the magnets in there and an explanation of the functionning: it was very impressive.

I hope to go back when they open LHC for public (they will, eventually) with the boys.

The WWW was also invented at the CERN, so whatever is the outcome of LHC, tehy have already revolutionned this world.

I would be the first in in the Black Hole, then... not very afraid, though.

Oh lord, I can only imagine what some of the crazies would try to do... to "save the world"... :Q

I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

Well, the CERN is open for visitors. And it is free - but you have to reserve four to six months in advance and register as a group. I went once for a visit with a group from Berlin, but we did not get into the LEP - the older version of the LHC. It's not easy to get a group visit permission, because there are too many people. Last summer there also was a day of open doors, when everybody could just get into the CERN. No problem at all. Now, with all this hysteria about the LHC, I'm not sure how it works now - but I know one of my colleagues who is a physics teacher visits with one group every year. On my last visit, I bought a watch they hd made for the 50th anniversary of the CERN for my dad, it was a cheap watch, more like a toy, but he loved it and was burried with it.

Anyway, people here in Geneva are proud of the CERN and I understand why.

It's weird to read about the fears because when you live here in the city where it happens, well it's in the newspapers, but nothing and nobody around the buildings of the CERN or the busses which go there.

I don't think that the LHC can be dammaged easily, by the way.

Should I regsiter b77 for a group visist and have a black hole and I am Galadriel moot in Geneva?

I'm not that surprised. It's a huge bunch of technology, and even the "toughest" technology can be broken if something goes wrong.

Crucifer, I heard about that, of course. (Of course - well, it's mainly a power issue and it does use a lot of power and a lot of Helium)

But that is dammage in working. I mean, unless you get down a huge part of explosives, you cannot easily destroy a huge machine like the LHC. So, what I meant: I don't think "crazies" can dammage the LHC if they manage to get on one of the visits of the CERN. I was told that to get down into the LEP alredy, you had to wear special shoes, checked like airports etc and you are surrounded. It's not so much for the safety of the machine as for your own - it's apparently not innocent to be so close to so strong magnetic fields.

I shall definately try to visit it!!!!

Welcome to science. I would have been shocked if this thing hit no snags, but I was hoping it'd go smoothly. Poor grad students.
