A 13 year old girl recently sent 14,528 text messages in one month.

If you were her parent, what would be your reaction to this?

Except all the other kids are inside texting... ;)

Like I said in HOF, I'd take the phone away from her. And she would be without a phone for a very long time. In my house there would be other restrictions as well, my kids would be grounded for a time too.

Same here. No phone for a very long time, probably till she was old enough to have a job and pay for it herself. Either that, or a phone for emergencies only with severe restrictions on it (no texting capability, etc.).

There would be other punishments, too, I'm sure. Lots of chores.

Of course, it says the dad has 900 texts per month, so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. He's just lucky he had the unlimited texting option.

And don't come back.

Wait that's what I tell my kids, of course they are 18. :)

:Q

Seriously, what? How is she even able to move her thumbs anymore? :suspicious: When was she sending all of these texts? :Q

"It works out to 484 text messages a day, or one every two minutes of every waking hour."

So, obviously she's texting during class, while walking, while doing anything. :Q

And, I'd be interested to see how many texts her four friends have. :Q

But yeah, she would definitely get the phone taken away if she was mine. No way would I allow her to do that.

Well, as someone pointed out on HoF, this probably includes mass texts. So it's likely not quite as often as it seems. That said, it's still completely ridiculous. :Q

The thing that puzzles me is what the heck can she talk about in thousands and thousands of texts? This is a 13 year old kid for heavens sake.

I also wonder what her schools policy is on texting in class since that would cut out major portions of her day right there.

Have you ever spent time with a group of four 13 year old girls?

They'll talk about ANYTHING. Boys, clothes, music....The list is endless.

I would break the phone. Then teach her the value of going outside and hanging out with her friends, and speaking to them without a phone as a buffer.

Yes, but her friends would just be texting/using their phones and she wouldn't get any interaction anyway.

Not a bad idea! ;)

Of course, I remember coming home from school, after having more or less been with my friends all day, and then talking on the phone for hours. And we wrote notes to each other all day long (back and forth, mostly kept in folders that we passed to one another between classes) and talked whenever we could get away with it (during class, in the hallways, etc.). I suppose it's not that different.

I do think those forms of communication are a little healthier and better than texting, though. Texting limits your words and your thoughts. I guess the up side is that you do have to learn to condense your thoughts.

*Reading the morning paper*

It says here that 60 % of Danes aged 13-24 send over 300 text messages a day. That's not far from this girl's 484.

The story indicates it was over winter break, which at least means she probably wasn't texting continually during class to get those numbers.

But. Still.

I would imagine that a lot of the texts consisted of "lol" and the like. Spamming texts, basically. It is a lot of texts, to be sure, but people now text all the time, on public transport particularly, often as a means to pass the time or avoid feeling awkward because no one's talking...

So whatever happened to internal narrative? To sitting and thinking about things, considering, ruminating, without the benefit of constant external echo-chamber comment?

Oh wait, she's 13. :D

Maybe it is a girl v boy thing because I never chatted on the phone with my friends when I was 13. We used the phone to make plans, then walked to each other's house, and executed those plans.
