Really, I thought there were enough threads in the symp that had been osgiliated, and thought we could bring all the donuts, flan, bagels, etc etc etc in here and have deep thoughts with each other coffee shop style.

So, now that I have my imaginary donut, I'll be contemplating the changes that Obama has begun so far. I think my favorite is giving the go-ahead for stem-cell research.

Do you have a favorite?

Or a most hated?

Chill out, have a donut, and discuss :)

I'm going to bed now (dwama makes me sleepy :D) but I'll come back... osgiliating is hungry work so I'd appreciate a donut or two. ;)

Berhael, what's the difference between French and Spanish flan?

I'm not a big donut fan, but I recently thawed a pumpkin roll that I'd saved from Christmas. Mmmmm. :D

No deeper conversation from me, though. I'm afraid I can barely string sentences together at this point.

I've been craving cinnamon buns all day, it's now 2.30 in the night and I can't sleep, and I'm very much regretting I didn't make some buns. :blackeye:

Edit: I just saw this: http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/ ... PQ20090123 five second ago, and I think it's absolutely wonderful. Obama has done lots of good things in just a few days. Let's hope he goes on at this rate for four (eight) years! :D

French flan is solid, a cake that you can slice and eat in portions like any other cake. Spanish flan is wobbly creme caramel (similar to panna cotta). :)

And now I'm really going to bed!

um Spanish flan is common here. It's like creme bruele with a caramel sauce. At least that's what it reminds me of.

*loves flan with yummy caramel sauce on top*

As for Obama, I'm glad for the changes he's making with Gitmo. I'm not thrilled with his abortion changes. *munches Amish friendship bread* Life is my keystone issue, though, so that's no surprise. I do need to read up a bit more on exactly what he did.

Good - closing Gitmo and the secret prisons.

Bad - agreeing with Bush that we need to continue the bailouts.

Neutral - his cabinet picks are a real mixed bag. Some of them are good, some of them are bad, and some of them are both at once!

I find myself nodding in agreement with everything I hear coming out from the White House these past few days. And that's quite a refreshing change. :)

I particularly liked the expediency with which Guantanamo (is that what you mean by Gitmo?) was dealt with. Now I wish they put those who authorised and ran it on trial, but I suppose that would be a bit too much.

As for withdrawing the troops from Iraq, did he promise to do that? Wow! Zapatero (the Spanish PM) promised to do that if he was elected and he did it as soon as he was, and of course he got a lot of flak for it from the right-wing factions. But I'm proud that a politician I voted for kept his word, and showed moral courage. I'm curious to see if said Spanish right-wing factions criticise Obama for doing pretty much the same. ;)

Pres. Obama said that he would remove troops from Iraq within a cretain amount of time. I believe he is saying 16 months but I hope that is pending the continued peace and smooth transfer of control. Due to our extremly strong presence it would be catastrophic for us to pull out right away, and I hope those wanting this will understand if things go bad it will take longer. I want our troops home just as much as anyone else but not at the cost of things going horribly wrong.

flan has the texture I would expect from a good nose blowing.......

I think it's a good bet that life is a keystone issue for most of us. :D :P

Freddy, I love flan, but people who don't usually don't because of the texture. Although I have never heard it described quite as...colorfully as you did!

Lali, the change Obama made regarding "abortion" was to restore funding to clinics that previously had to close due to being forbidden to mention or give out any information about abortion to their clients. This included ALL clients - rape victims, high-risk pregnancies, everything. They were not permitted to even breathe the word "abortion" no matter what the circumstance...even if it was a medically viable option. It was effectively a gag order - blackmail, if you will. Many of the clinics closed because they could not, in good conscience, withhold vital information from a patient.

Trouble was, most of these clinics were not "abortion clinics" per se - they were general health clinics which also provided birth control and advice/treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. I personally think that this hurt many more people than it helped...people who might have gotten treatment for AIDS, or for any other STI, young women who needed contraception and yes, girls and women who could have used some solid information about abortion. Not to mention other health services provided.

We cannot and should not impose First World rules/morality on Third World countries. The situation in many cases is desperate there...and closing clinics because they informed patients of a certain (legal) procedure was simply wrong, IMHO.

I am very pleased with Obama's decision.

C_G, I also find his cabinet choices...interesting. As I said on another thread, I think balance is important in politics...and he sure has chosen a wide variety.

From Yahoo Canada survey:

Do you think the Obama coverage is overkill?
(60%)Yes, I'm happy he's elected but enough already!
(40%)No, I want to hear about the change he's bringing!

I don't eat sweets/deserts only ice cream. Thanks!

Freddy, I think you're right about the dog.

It's been a really long time since we had kids this young in the White House. I hope the nation can contain itself, honestly. I'm glad Mama Michelle is as vigilant as she is - those girls will be growing up in a virtual fishbowl. She is reportedly not pleased about the dolls already created with her daughter's names and likenesses.
