Tossing the ball back and pitching are entirely different things.
There is no comparison between the pitcher's involvement in a game and the rest of the team. They do the bulk of the work and missing 4 at bats doesn't alter that.
And there are the inter league games where the pitchers have to bat so that adds to it.

Personally I like things how they are now. I don't mind having one league with a dh and another without it. It has been like that since '73 and isn't likely to change anyway. And since then the AL has won 20 World Series titles. :P

Piffle.

Most pitchers don't even pitch half a game...sometimes they pitch for less than an inning.
And the catcher has to throw while he's squatting on the ground. And for the entire game. The catcher is the heart and soul of the team. Pitchers come and go and rotate around and are brought in for three pitches and then they go sit on the bench. They're treated like they're made of glass.

It isn't the same.

The DH was supposed to be an experiment and the AL was supposed to go back to the REAL game. But they didn't. The DH RUINS the inner beauty of the game. RUINS IT. :P

I think Obama's next executive order should be to get RID of the designated hitter rule, once and for all. I may start an on-line petition. Who's with me?

By far, the most sought after commodity in the game is pitching. Nobody wins titles without good pitching.
Good pitching negates out good hitting. Every play starts with the ball in the pitcher's hands. Every play.
Teams have altered the use of pitchers over the years and have realized the effectiveness drops off after 100 pitches, so they developed specialized pitchers.

The lifespan of most pitchers is notably less than that of other players due to the vast amount of strain throwing pitches 90+ miles an hour. Cannot compare that with swinging a bat or making throws from the field.

This is all much ado about nothing. The DH is here and it is going to stay. People want action and a pitcher laying down a bunt or striking out doesn't cut it. Teams want their pitchers to pitch and they want them to concentrate on that. They don't care if they can hit or not. That isn't where the value lies.

yeah yeah, what Jewelsong said..... :P . Catchers also throw to the bases far more often than the pitcher. Besides catchers are the glue that hold the team together. Sorry, pitchers in the AL aren't real Bball players, just pretenders. Can you tell I used to be a catcher?

Besides, of course the AL has won more games, their pitchers only play about a 1/4 of a season when all is said and done! They have plenty left in them.

Quit using logic! There is no place for logic in the Symp!

This is not about the lifespan of pitchers or the number of games won or what the fans want or anything.

This is about the symmetry of the game.

Baseball is a perfect game. Theoretically, it could go on and on forever, just like the baselines extend into infinity. Every player plays offense, every player plays defense. You can't take a player out and then put him back in again. You have to strategize, plan, use the what resources you have, take things into consideration and use your players to your best advantage.

It ruins the game when a pitcher can sit on the bench instead of batting - and when the DH stays the same even if the team goes through 6 pitchers.

The DH is simply a sell-out, that's all.

Totally agree. Especially because Holby is outnumbered, two to one.

Baseball is different than politics.

It is way more important.

Who's this Obama person and which team does he play for? I didn't see him listed in either the steelers or the cardinals teams...
