Posted on Daily Kos- an Obamaton tells the truth:
Quote:
Americans are so conditioned to feel shame and horror at the concept of getting government dole. You mentioned that you were a non citizen, but still seem to have that inner struggle. I am an immigrant myself, and for people of my community, getting benefits from all sources (government and insurance companies being the favored sources) is like a favored contact sport. A car accident, a disability, anything can become an opportunity to spear a fat payout from somebody or other. The assumption being a very rational one, that these bastards would as soon step on you as look down, so any money you can take them for is a liberation of capital to the people. The scams abound, it's pretty hilarious, though I arrived early enough to get Anglo and now work real jobs, while remaining in moral solidarity with my scheming countrymen. So don't feel bad, you scammed the state for a bit of sweet cash. And the cycle of life continues.

Yeah, because everyone thinks like that asshole. Let's just throw everybody genuinely unable to work on the street and leave their children to starve because one or two jerks think they're man enough to play the system.

Solictr, I work at a crisis hotline on Fridays. I have talked to a few hustlers who are trying to get around the system, but I have talked with hundreds of people who are homeless, hungry, beaten by their spouse or parents or children, cheated on by their employers, mentally ill, drug-addicted, developmentally delayed, in chronic pain, or a combination of the above. They aren't trying to use the system, they are just trying to get in out of the cold, or get a hot meal, or find some way to pay their electric bill. I don't know what "community" your quote comes from, but for people in my community - across racial, ethnic and nationality boundaries - the getting of benefits (which is difficult to do) is not like a "favored contact sport".

Have you ever considered working with the poor instead of talking about them?

Try changing the noun from immigrant to banker.

So solicitr, do you actually have a view on this we can properly debate with you?

Or should I just find a link that kind of expresses my view and lazily be done with it?

Or even easier, just call you Googlebot and put on ignore?

Well....
I am certainly not in favor of using the system. However, if it weren't for the state stepping in to help, my children would have no medical care. My youngest son has severe allergies, and there is no way that I could afford to pay for all of his medications on a monthly basis.
My husband and I both work, and are trying to save money for a house.
Most people that need government help are just like us. It is the few greedy idiots that give all of us a bad name.

Lidless, looks like Solictr has made 7 posts on this board and three of them were quote-free. So don't exaggerate. :salmon: :D

In all things, The Perfect should not be made the enemy of The Good. (thank you Voltaire) No system meant to help millions of people is not going to have a bit of fraud or milking attached to it. Do we then punish millions of deserving needy people to punish or deny the smaller percentage who take advantage of the system? As a collective society we have made these decisions.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs. - John Rogers

If we accept a fifty-per-cent pass rate, he's still failing. :P
