Muller said Wednesday that he'd have no qualms about seeing waterboarding used if it would protect his young daughters.
It's popular to pose gotcha scenarios like this, but it's beside the point IMO. There are all sorts of things I'd be willing to do for the sake of my own self-interest that I'd freely admit are wrong in the Kantian* sense of the word. Would I waterboard a suspected terrorist to save my son's life? Sure, but with the expectation of being punished if I were caught. I would never support enshrining the practice as law.

I remain unconvinced water-boarding, or torture in general, is going to save anyone's life.

I heard a clip of Muller getting waterboarded on NPR. They were playing back the snippet from Muller's show. I admit to a certain amount of vindictive satisfaction over the outcome, mixed with a larger amount of disgust over the whole thing. Really, I could have done without the howling and hubris. But Muller has now joined the ranks of those who've tried it for themselves and agree it's torture and since there're people that listen to him I guess that's good thing. That said, I still think SCUBA lessons are a much friendlier way to experience the terror of drowning.

That clip was very interesting. (I have been following the thread since it started but I didn't want to post). At least if he didn't think it was torture before now he knows. Some people just have to learn the hard way I guess.

OK, I've finally gotten around to reading this thread. I'd been avoiding it, you see, because the thought of torture is so repugnant to me.

There has been talk of internet civilians and their opinions on this thread. Well, I am a veteran, and I oppose torture.

I don't care if it works. (even though it doesn't)

I don't care if it saves lives. (ditto)

IT IS DISHONORABLE TO HURT SOMEONE WHO CAN'T FIGHT BACK. I am deeply ashamed that the military I once was part of ever practiced torture. I still blush when I think of Abu Garab, to think I was once a part of that Army. :bawl: What the Bush era condoned is as bad as a police officer beating a cuffed prisoner or a parent burning a child with cigarettes, or a rape.

There are some things we should die, rather than do.

"Death before dishonor" ought to still mean something in this world. :x

Thank you Maria. Though I've been assuming you feel this way, FWIW, I'm glad you shared.

Nice to see some converts on the waterboarding issue. By the by, Mancow held out for 5 seconds, and you can its effects on a willing subject.

I counted about 8 but yeah.
Watching a second example of this, it's very surprising how strong the reactions are. It doesn't look like much. But I'll take their word at how horrifying it is.

Yovi, thank you very much for posting the video. Seeing someone who did not think it was torture and go through it and change their mind I think is very helpful. Seeing his his reaction the second he went through it was very very interesting. It was clear he was shaken afterward.

For those who missed the earlier thread on this:

http://www.board77.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5927

Included is a link to the bipartisan senate armed services committee report on "enhanced interrogation techniques." I challenge anyone who supports these techniques to continue to do so after reading this report.

Having read all the posts so far my $0.02.

I could see agonizing over whether to use water boarding if it really did save lives and it was one of the only options to do so. However, this is really not necessary as the best results come from the same methods used by the Germans and the Allies during WWII that did not include any torture. German and allied interrogators ended up establishing a relationship with their prisoners and just talking to them. Afterwords many of the POW's were shocked to find out how much info they gave up. You really do catch more flies with honey. :)
