Watch the Attack

An Iraqi reporter threw his shoes at Bush after yelling "here is your farewell kiss, you dog." Daily Show got scooped because the story itself is funnier than any possible commentary.

Too little, too late. ;)

No, I tease. Many politicians could use a good shoe in the forehead now and then. Might even help more than, you know, assassinating them. Hard to say, but it makes for a good watch anyhow.

Good thing he was good at ducking considering how slow secret service was to get to him or the guy throwing the shoe

I don't really think it was funny though. I don't like Bush, but I don't ever really think violence of any sort is funny.

I'm with Estel on this one. I don't like Bush at all, but I find this act to be disgusting and disappointing.

It's a national pastime in the UK to chuck stuff at our leaders. Let's see, off the top of my head Edward Heath got both eggs and red paint; not at the same time. Thatcher I think escaped though someone knocked the head off her statue somewhere. John Major managed to just avoid a mortar shell but that was the IRA so doesn't really count. Blair got flour and some purple dye thrown on him inside Parliament. His deputy, John Prescott famously got an egg in the neck at the height of a general election and punched the thrower very professionally on camera. The public seemed to approve of a politician thumping a voter.
Perhaps Bush should have walked over and duked him one.

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion.

Putting the boot in, I guess.

Got to say some of my thoughts were along the lines of Estel with the response of the Secret Service. I guess it does not work the way it does in the Clint Eastwood LINE OF FIRE film.

This kind of "violence" is hilarious. I, too, wondered why the Secret Service didn't leap onto the guy. I bet Bush chuckled about it.

I do think it's not funny as to have happen to the position of the President of the US. However, I have had to bit my lip to keep from not giggling at the look on Bush's face.

My shock comes from the slow to react secret service. It was other reporters that grabbed the guy to begin with. I have a feeling had it been in the US the person would have been shot.

I'm still very amazed by the reaction time of Bush. He's fast. :Q

Not to derail this, but how in Gods name is it considered horrible violence on the part of the man who threw the shoes, but not on the part of the man who sent thousands to their deaths in an unjustified war? He deserves worse.

No one said it was horrible violence.

We're all aware of what Bush has done. But throwing shoes at the man isn't excusable either even if it is a small act.

I'm not going to root for violence of any sort done on another person. Impeach Bush, put him on trial, imprison him...yes, go for it. Encourage violence toward him and laugh about it? Not for me.

I don't know that it counts as violence. The intent was to insult him, not to physically harm him. It was more like an aggressive rude gesture.

I agree with Dave. You have to take cultural context into account. In most (if not all) Arab cultures, throwing your shoes at someone is a sign of utter contempt.

Anyway, how much damage could the shoe have done. I mean, serious damage, not an ickle bruisey.

I don't really find it funny either. (Though I did chuckle at Leno's comment last night, "We finally found something that Bush is good at--dodgeball!") I am really shocked at the lack of action by the Secret Service. I am betting some heads roll on this one.

Maybe he went on a few quail hunts with Cheney and dodging became second nature.

It may be the first time in his 8-year tenure that he tried to avoid taking a loafer.
