I'm sure Al would be more successful in distinguishing nudes and dunes.

Here's a discussion of just how Legolas was able to count the Riders of Rohan from 5 leagues away. Which I can't post to HoF because of a few instances of Language. Solid science, though.

Quote:
Two millennia ago, a small Greco-Roman temple in present-day Turkey awed and enthralled its residents. Just beyond its stone gate, in a grotto shrouded in a heavy mist, a strange force worked dark deeds: Bulls ushered inside would lie down and perish; the castrated priests in charge would emerge unscathed.

Was it the bloodthirsty will of Pluto, the god of the underworld? The supernatural power of the priests? New research published on Feb. 12 in the journal Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences suggests a far earthlier explanation to the cave’s mystery: noxious carbon dioxide.

Almond Growers Are Breeding a Novel Replacement for the Embattled Honeybee

Not sure if an exciting science development or an ad for an upcoming horror movie.

I couldn't read it without paying, but noticed that they've stopped the program.

Mason bees seem to be a good alternative, though the growers will have to reduce their reliance on pesticides (which doesn't bother me in the least. :) ):

We seem to have lots of native bees in our yard and I agree with the article that they're nice bees, not aggressive at all.

Puffin beaks are fluorescent and we had no idea
Quote:
A scientist in England has made an enlightening discovery about Atlantic puffins — under a UV light, their bills glow like a freshly cracked glow stick.
Quote:
Unlike humans, birds have always known about the extra colours in the puffin bill. That's because they can see a whole other dimension of hues, said Dunning.

Humans see colours that are a mix of red, blue and green, he notes, while birds have a fourth colour in the mix — a property called tetrachromatic vision.

"They can see colours that we can't comprehend," Dunning said.

I don't know if it counts as science. I'm pretty sure they can't narrow it down to a century, let alone a day. Still, cool to think about it.

Today in 4000 BC is the approximate date of the domestication of horses on the Eurasian steppe, near Dereivka, in Central Ukraine.

How in the world do they know?

It reminds me of that crazy timeline I came across back in my YEC days that had the exact date God created the world.

October 23*, 4004 BC

*Also the day I got married, only in 1993.

Tibbles and Tiger might not let you know it, but they appear to recognise when their name is being called, research into human-cat relationships has claimed.

The researchers said previous studies had shown that other animals, including dogs, dolphins and parrots could show some understanding of human vocalisations, but it was unclear whether felines could too.

Now for the first time research appears to suggest domestic cats could pick out their name in a string of words.
As the report says, many of us already knew this. It's a myth you can't train a cat. All of our cats would come when you called their names, understood and obeyed "No" since they were kittens, and picked up on other words with time. ("Treat" is always one they learn quickly. :) )
