Perhaps this thread will a useful place to publicise all those little scientific stories that appeal to us.
Here is my contribution to start it off. I like it because it's a cheap simple way of providing yet another tool to get the all important true chronology on which all of history and archaeology rests upon.

Cutbacks.

(or should that be cutoffs? )

It's all part of the longterm anti-recession plan: Fewer men means a smaller workforce due to less reproducing: less money is needed to keep the world going, as less food, housing etc. is needed, so the population will also eventually fit the economy.

Check out some of their other videos. Like I said to my friend who posted the link on Facebook, "I guess we should learn to say the name 'Festo' with reverence, as they will soon be our robot overlords!" :Q

When an organic chemist gets scared, it's best for the rest of us to pay attention. ;)

Seriously though, I'd be surprised if any of us encountered any of this stuff. We can just read and cringe and giggle. And I am rather glad that no one on my campus is doing these reactions. I'm also wondering what it would be like, to work in a lab where things just explode on a routine basis. At what point does your boss let you give up? After the first explosion? The second? The twentieth?

Three hundred million years ago the Y chromosome had about 1,400 genes on it, and now it's only got 45 left, so at this rate we're going to run out of genes on the Y chromosome in about five million years.
Duh. When and if Y-decay becomes a barrier to reproduction, the rate will slow; it's the simplest sort of Darwinism. Aren't scientists supposed to be taught about extrapolating beyond bounds?

The phrase "at present rates" and all its variations should be banned by law.

Hear hear! Extrapolating from the last 60 years I should live for ever.

That's really interesting! And so surprising that no one realized it till now.

Sometimes you don't see stuff that's right in front of you.

In 3.5 billion years, there is a 1/2500 chance that Earth and Venus will collide. Of course, this is also around the time that the Sun is due to expand into a red giant and swallow the inner planets whole anyway, but how's that for an apocalypse?

Awesomely horrifying. Horrifyingly awesome. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the mouth of the beast.
Quote:
But money cannot completely resolve the problem. Researchers recently found six unique strains of bacteria that live in a bed of pink slime that is part of a little-understood biochemical cycle that devours iron, produces sulfuric acid, and creates a nightmarish broth of copper, zinc and arsenic. That toxic broth will continue pouring out of the mine forever, or until someone figures out a way to neutralize the chemical and biological reactions, scientists say.

"We spent a good deal of time trying to see if we could shut it down, and our conclusion was that we couldn't," said Sugarek, adding that the only hope is for some future innovation or new technology. "We know we can continue what we are doing for 100 years. The estimate is that it will take the mountain about 3,000 years to use up all the pyrite."

The damp, dark passage where Sugarek stood Thursday was nothing compared with the hellish alien environment deeper inside the mine. There, chemical reactions drive temperatures up to 130 degrees, the water is almost pure sulfuric acid, and stalactites and stalagmites of acid salt cover the walls.
And my own personal favorite bit...
Quote:
A NASA scientist once sent a robot into the bowels of the mine. It did not return, Sugarek said. Nobody that he knows of has been killed, but Sugarek said a worker testing the water above the debris dam suffered "some exfoliation of the skin" after his rubber raft was punctured and he was forced to swim to safety.
:Q :Q

There's a lot to be learned here, if you can study it. Otherwise, it's a fine cautionary tale in creating hell on Earth.

:Q It reminds me of the book I just read on Niagara Falls and the mess they created up there with all of the chemical plants. :nono:

This part:
Quote:
The elderly owner of the property, Ted Arman, who bought the 3,500-foot mountain from the last mining company for $100,000, has not been much help, proposing a resumption of mining in addition to construction of a 200-foot-tall marble statue of Jesus Christ.
:suspicious: Yes, when in doubt about how to clean up a disaster area, put up a giant Jesus statue.
